YMMV / Hazbin Hotel: Lucifer's Folly

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Is Steve Stinger suicidal? He kills himself at the end of every show he does but it's never been confirmed if he does it for shock value or because he hates his life.
    • A popular theory proposed by Mittens is that John may actually be a closeted homosexual whose in denial. While John does make plenty of homophobic comments (especially towards Cazador) at the same time he never seems to leave Cazador alone, constantly makes comments on how he likes hearing Cazador "hiss", constantly tries to be his "best friend" despite being an asshole to him many times and doesn't like the concept of Cazador hating him back, and also has dressed in drag, for seemingly no reason at several points.
  • Anti-Climax Boss: The Strigoi Mafia get taken down in a manner of seconds in their original demise in the original version of the "Kidnapped" plot. Averted in the remake version done on Lucifer's Folly, where they get to put up an actual fight before Rimmon fights our heroes.
  • Ass Pull:
    • John somehow being able to catch lightning bolts with his bare hands. He never even displays such a power again after Anubis strikes him once. Likewise, John somehow surviving getting shot with an angelic gun and simply pulling out the angelic rounds as if they were simply Nerf darts despite them always being portrayed as lethal.
      • John also somehow being able to destroy several of Valentino's porn studios, with no explanation as to how or why he can do this.
    • Evan Smith had a lot of these, but probably the biggest examples was him somehow mastering the ability to control electricity despite it being one of his weaknesses and him suddenly going insane during Cazador's wedding, even though he never showed any signs of being mentally tormented or psychotic beforehand (or afterwards for that matter).
    • Literally just about anything Leon St. John does, as many a time he will suddenly have difficulties facing an opponent he'll just bust out a new powerup and weapon he can use to defeat his opponent. One of the most infamous examples was him somehow having three angelic weapons despite the fact having one alone is insanely difficult to get.
    • Malthael summoning forth a Persian time god to heal someone. Doubles as a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment as it comes out of nowhere and is never explained as to how Malthael could do this suddenly and never uses it again, but what really sells it is just the sheer absurdity of it all. It's often considered to be a "peak asspull" for this very reason.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Kendrick Greenman; a good character or just an edgelord? Some people are split on him (even his own creator), as while his character being a super serious, hard-working man with serious mental problems who and being damned to Hell being played very realistically makes sense, some feel also he's too aggressive and unlikeable at times. He has toned down a bit ever since joining the hotel, though.
    • In-universe, Fucko the Clown can be seen as this as while he has legions of fans (including Angel Dust and Crymini), your just as likely to find people who find him annoying such as Vaggie and Cazador.
    • Another in-universe example, while Tamor in ¡Asquerosos Animales! (a telenovela both Cazador and Vaggie enjoy watching) has a lot of fans, both Cazador and Vaggie strongly dislike him for taking over the show.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: A few;
    • Ryuk from Death Note briefly appearing to Angel Dust to give him a book and offer assistance to kill some Nazi demons who were outside. Angel Dust doesn't even acknowledge him and Ryuk never appears before or after this scene and it comes out of nowhere and is never brought up again. Even more damning, crossovers aren't even allowed.
    • The Helltaker incarnation of Cerberus being present. Much like the Ryuk example, there's a no crossover rule and thus shouldn't be present; but the kicker is not only did she somehow become part of Hotel staff (without permission from any of the Hotel members) she quickly disappears as she comes and is never brought up again.
    • Evan Smith briefly appearing in a scene where Charlie and Alastor are talking to each other. Only he doesn't do or say anything, he just lingers there silently before then quietly disappearing from the scene.
    • Also counts as an Ass Pull but John catching lightning made by Anubis with one of his hands one time. He never displays any abilities like this ever again.
    • While locked in Snowcone and Gavin's shop, Bonny summons an Eldritch Abomination after suddenly learning how to speak Armenian. It quickly disappears and never shows up again.
    • Leon's cameo in the original Meconians RP by suddenly appearing in the middle of nowhere (having no way of knowing also that Cazador, Angel Dust and Snowcone would be out in the middle of nowhere as well) by appearing to ram his car against the Meconians house is this, as he never shows up again in the RP and doesn't contribute anything more.
    • Evan Smith dying for about a week (still dead despite respawning being a thing) and coming back briefly as a ghost.....in Hell, when he could have just respawned. It's never even brought up again as to where this ghost came from and Evan Smith just comes back the next RP alive and well with no explanation or acknowledgement of the ghost beforehand.
    • Funny as it was, the "John Deacon" RP (no, not the John Deacon of Queen) is this. An unrelated Cold Open to an otherwise standard RP, it's pretty fucking weird in that Angel Dust goes into a bar and meets this VERY human-looking man named "John Deacon" who is seemingly set up as a major character and displays all Johnclone traits...and then is immediately killed by Valentino once he runs outside. Cazador then spots John Deacon's dead body and comes inside to speak to Angel Dust. John Deacon is never even brought up again after this.
    • Cazador's wedding had a very bizarre part in it initially where as Cazador and Alasmore we're getting married, John starts seeing numbers and goes berserk, deciding that he should go kill Cazador. Just as John is going to kill Cazador however, suddenly Evan Smith goes insane with him having voices in his head telling him to kill John, so then Evan Smith decides that he should go kill John, who was already going to kill Cazador. Just then Calc eats an imp and goes to kill Evan, who was going to kill John, who was going to kill Cazador. And then Leon gets out his guns and starts to go crazy, about to kill Calc, who was about to kill Evan, who was about to kill John, who was about to kill Cazador. Everyone else then started calling this out as it was supposed to be a normal RP and thus the Trauma Conga Line part was dropped entirely, but it's still very weird as no explanation besides John's is every given as to why they all suddenly started going insane.
    • John Cooper being kidnapped at the end of the Rudy plot just to be beaten and tortured by some drug gang he owed money to and it's Played for Drama and taken very seriously, with John Cooper being brutally beaten and tortured....and then it's never brought up again after John Cooper returns to the hotel, with the plotline quickly being abandoned right afterwards. It's never explained as to who these men were or why John Cooper even owed them money to begin with anyways.
  • Bizarro Episode:
    • The RP where both Angel Dust and Cazador take zombie drugs and go all feral. Boy was that a strange one...
    • The RP where both Angel Dust and Cazador get locked in a bar and deal with a lot of friends and enemies, not to mention deal with the seemingly imaginary pegasus demon Zepio and get drugged by Abraxas.
    • "Giant Monster Fat Nuggets". It has to be seen to be believed.
    • "Cretaceous Estate", in where Baxter creates a clone army of dinosaur demons based on pre-existing characters.
    • The RP where Angel Dust got turned into a real spider. It only gets weirder from there...
    • The "Cazador's Trippy Dream" RP from the Wrath Ring arc.
    • Gallibon seems really fond of this trope, as he likes making really weird R Ps.
  • Broken Base:
    • The decision to make Hazbin Hotel: Lucifer's Folly into an alternative canon. While most believe this to be a good and easy way to not complicate everything done in the server (prior to the show's release, Lucifer's Folly had at least been going on for four years and with an ongoing story) and still be able to utilize some characters and ideas without straying too far from the source, their are some who believe that not taking up some parts of canon can be a bit confusing as not everyone agrees on what to keep from canon and what not to.
    • Shadow powers. An interesting power or a confusing and overpowered mess? This is the ability most users (including the staff) are split on. Some feel that shadow powers are too vague, overused and overpowered as such shouldn't be used. Others feel however that their not a bad power in itself and has been used just as well before (Anubis being a good example of such) and also feel that the shadow powers aren't as overused as some make them out to be. There is also a third camp that believes that shadow powers can be good, their just utilized poorly often is the issue.
    • Blackmore Sails Again is perhaps one of the most base-breaking plots. A fun romp or a boring mess? No one can seem to agree exactly on it. While both the creators Potato and Gallibon consider it to be one of the worst plots, fellow creators Mono and Jamell both enjoyed it and consider it to be a good plot, with other users sharing a similar sentiment. For detractors; reasons for it not being a good plot are due to Gallibon's characters not being properly utilized, the overly long song, and bloated length. For fans of the plot however some didn't mind the length of the song or the RP itself and consider the fights to be some of the best in the server's recent memory. Adding to this further is that it still did introduce popular characters Captain Blackmore and Salinity, both of whom are very well-liked. There's also a third but smaller camp that believes that the plot wasn't all that bad, but could have been better if given more time to be fully developed.
  • Cargo Ship:
    • Cazador and his car. He really likes his car.
    • Jahn Kolone and his guns also. He even actually starts fucking his guns at one point!
    • Chaz seems to love his donuts a little too much...
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • It's brief, but Purr-Vert getting her ass kicked by Monty Python was extremely satisfying after everything she had done to him at this point.
    • Rift Landshark getting smacked across by Baxter during the Buffster plot.
    • Just about any time Vroomius Maximus gets his ass kicked or gets his comeuppance for the crimes he's committed, such as getting his ass beat up by Jamell during the Angel Dust Clones sequel plot.
  • Common Knowledge:
    • Despite popular belief, no Smiley was not based off of Rage Comics featuring stick figure men from the late 2000's. He was actually influenced by the works of Don Hertzfeldt.
    • El Bandito is often mistaken as being a former Overlord akin to Husk....which isn't true, he was simply IWF's original top champion wrestler before being defeated by Rift Landshark, who became one. El Bandito himself however was never an Overlord himself.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Tons. With it being set in Hell, there's so many things that go from being offensive to hilarious fast, such as:
    • The fact there's a TV show in Hell starring Jeff Epstein and his many misadventures. Even the other characters are disturbed by this.
    • Just about every single one of Gavin's kills are this. They're done in such a goofy and over the top way that you just can't take them seriously.
    • The infamous laughtrack in the Meconians RP. Being lured to a deserted house out in the middle of nowhere where a an army of mutilated hillbilly demons want to kill you and take your body parts for new parts for themselves? Horrifying. Adding a laughtrack to every morbid thing they do, such as dragging Angel Dust into the cellar to meet his demise? Fucking hilarious.
    • Murmur and Verona watching Sinners getting purged n Extermination Day and laughing their asses off while they're far off safe in their castle. They're even having a picnic as it's going on!
    • Simpy the Imp Kid putting his co-star Dangle the Angel on a crucifix and then lighting him on fire while imp children laugh and sing is most definitely this.
    • Steve Stinger's late night show is full of this.
    • Apple Doom's entire concept. A many dying of an untreated tapeworm? Tragic. Said tapeworm dying with him and also becoming a demon that he can talk to, use as a weapon to eat other demons and constantly refer to as his best friend he's ever had? Hysterical.
    • Arackniss's method of torture for Angel Dust? Tying him to a slab and forcing him to watch Seltzer and Friedberg movies on an endless loop.
    • Bong Mask summons out a kaiju to attack the Hotel gang once they arrive in Jigoku. Why? Simply because he hates tourists.
  • Creepy Awesome: Alastor is naturally this, but Baxter being a wicked mad scientist who performs such destructive but effective inventions also makes him qualify.
  • Designated Hero:
    • There is absolutely nothing heroic about John, Leon or Evan despite the fact we were meant to root for them. For starters, John is incredibly bigoted by constantly making homophobic remarks towards gay people (especially towards Cazador) and also was incredibly racist towards Sinners of other nationalities (such as on purposedly calling Snowcone Chinese slurs as opposed to referring him to what he actually is, a Japanese Sinner). He was also shown to not care about redemption and was more interested in committing in terrorist actions, picking fights with more powerful demons to prove how strong he was. For Leon, not only does he not care about redemption but he is also shown to be a self-entitled, insecure Ungrateful Bastard who only cared about himself and cares not for others feelings. Most notably he repeatedly picked fights with Overlords and Demons of Ars Goetia on a regular basis (seemingly never learning his lesson to ''not'' fight them) and despite the Hotel members efforts to have save him and get him out of situations that would have otherwise killed him (such as being shot with an angelic round), he never repays him the favor and instead doesn't even bother helping them (even leaving a fellow patient to get killed on the beach one time and also actually killing another one other time). That's not even getting started on his petty rivalry with Gavin or him wanting to bring angelic weapons to the Hotel. Finally, Evan Smith also falls into this hard due to him being extremely dangerous, overpowered and not thinking about his actions often which have put many other characters in trouble as a result of his poor decision making and abhorrent poor communication skills.
    • Rift Landshark and Vroomius Maximus are in-universe examples, both of them being treated and hailed as heroes by IWF and Shohohei Studios, but the two are so dick-headed, egotistic and brutal towards their opponents to the point of being comical.
    • Simpy the Imp Kid is another In-Universe example. Despite him being the main character of a children's show in Hell and meant to be a role model, he teaches kids bad morals and repeatedly tortures and kills his main co-star Dangle. Given the show is an Anti-Heaven Propaganda Piece, however, it's probably the show's intent.
    • Baxter can kind of have shades of this to some, with him causing trouble to his friends and the Hotel be it either with his crazy inventions or bad decisions, but at the very least he will do his best to fix his mistakes and make up for what he did previously to have caused the problem in the first place.
  • Designated Monkey: Cazador, Gavin and Toby were all subjected to various punishment in their original characterizations when, despite the fact all three had their problems, the punishments they got were almost always overblown and undeserved.
  • Designated Villain:
    • Baxter in the Hate Boner plot. While him trying to build his own secret volcano lair around Hate Boner's home wasn't cool, how was he supposed to know that someone was already living at the volcano at Cthulhu Beach? Worse, he doesn't even cause the problem this time as it was one of his monsters who did (by dropping a sandwich into the volcano, which disturbed Hate Boner) and even when he tries to solve the problem, everyone treats him as a the villain and he doesn't even get any help in defeating Hate Boner.
    • Gavin, at least during the days of Hazbins Hell Hotel. While he certainly isn't a good guy and has killed people, he was repeatedly targeted and killed for simply annoying people. Adding to the fact this his enemies were were ALSO mass murderers (who have also have done far worse than him) makes it all the more glaring.
    • Edward St. John also ultimately ended up being this. Despite being talked about as "one of the most evil Overlords of Hell", we're never actually shown him acting evil in anyway once he finally appears. He's described as being "sadistic" and "cruel", both of which never show up in his character either, not even in the Affably Evil way. Instead, he comes off as well-composed, level-headed, chill and well-meaning; especially when in contrast this abhorrent son Leon. The worst thing he does is show up at the Hotel and try to start a fight, but only because he was searching for Leon St. John. Added to the fact the only person he was really after was Leon St. John (who he himself is ironically much more deviant and vicious than his father) and otherwise doesn't take on anyone associated down with him, he comes off as more of a Well-Intentioned Extremist instead and a hardly villainous one at that.
    • Cazador was this back in the Hazbins Hell Hotel days as well, often being treated as a villain for....calling John and Leon out for their bullshit.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Jacob. Originally was just meant to be a nameless dread featured in a Hunger Games Simulator joke no less, he quickly became very popular for his Memetic Badass reputation and was even made canon!
    • Lamashtu is very popular in deviantArt circles.
    • Avery and Manon (Volk's first two love interests respectively) are still fondly remembered to this day despite having small roles in the grand scheme of things. Manon is seen as a worthy successor for Avery in Volk's case however and is even considered better in some circles. Needless to say when it was announced that Gr1m, Manon's user, was leaving, she was only further cemented into this spot.
      • Alasmore (Cazador's first love interest) is likewise also similarly fondly remembered despite his small role. Even when after Alasmore left, to this day he is unmatched and Cazador has never gotten a replacement.
    • DJ MLG Airhorn King. Originally just supposed to be a stupid one-off gag character, he quickly became one of the most popular Demon Wrestlers due to his funny design but also suprisingly being very effective.
    • Karl is this, mainly for his neat design and his funny character interactions. Many wish he would appear more for this reason.
    • The unnamed seahorse demon who enjoys getting killed by Gavin a little too much.
    • Scamley Bugman is one as well, thanks to his cool design, his funny demeanor and how well his debut plot was.
    • The Rusty Knives Gang (consisting of Gash, Smiley and Biss) are very popular in spite of their rather limited appearances. Biss in particular is well liked for being Gavin's love interest.
    • While he was meant to be somewhat of a major character, Buer is very popular mainly due to having some of the funniest moments in the server's history and having a surprisingly tragic character.
    • Maggie Hellraiser is a fan favorite for her interesting personality and the ongoing story she's involved in
  • Evil Is Cool: Many a villain in Lucifer's Folly are this. Such examples include Alastor himself, Baxter, Murmur, Gevaudan Silverwolf, Anubis (even though he's technically not a villain) El Condor, Mephistopheles, Gunhead and Morax.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Cazador is often referred to as "Godzilla" or "Barney". Most commonly however he is called "Crocodilf", due to him being a crocodile and his body appearance.
    • Fitz is often nicknamed as "Thanos" or "Purple Guy" due to the purple hue of his skin.
    • Gavin is simply known as "Puppet" to some.
    • Less flatteringly, Malthael is often called as "Darth Bootleg".
  • Friendly Fandoms: With Roleplay Grid, another RP series that both Gallibon and some of the same writers have worked on before. There's even references to RPG done on HHLF a few times.
  • Genius Bonus: Mephisto's Eye-Obscuring Hat?. In gambling, especially card games, players will often look at eachother's faces and especially eyes to read what they are thinking and tell when they are bluffing. Fitting for a manipulative liar, Mephistopheles would not want his eyes (assuming he has them) to be read.
  • Growing the Beard:
    • In terms of plots, while the early R Ps were fine and fun on their own, they also were a bit repetitive in terms of plot, with it being mostly focused on Angel Dust. Come "The Sad Wolf" arc which had actual good realistic drama, better paced comedy, great action, introduction to the Strigoi Mafia and excellent character development for both Volk and Cazador, it was seen as an improvement for the HH R Ps in general and was where Gallibon began to take the storyline more seriously and created the intricate storyline for Lucifer's Folly what we have now.
    • Site-wise, Lucifer's Folly originally started off as a "more sane" clone of Hazbins Hell Hotel at first. This changed in Summer of 2022 where it was gradually revamped and updated and now has far distance itself from its predecessor.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Volk is a big buff wolf demon who acts something as a security for the Hotel. Cue Helluva Boss and the character Vortex who not only looks similar (even the name beginning with a "Vo") but even plays a similar role! Only difference is that Volk is a protagonist.
    • Sir Pentious was (initially) played as having turned into a good guy demon and joined the hotel. This was, at the time, received negatively. Cut to late 2022 where it's revealed through sneaks for Hazbin Hotel that Sir Pentious has indeed joined the main Hazbin cast.
    • Gevaudan Silverwolf is a tall, smooth, suave and cunning wolf demon who acts as the leader of his own group of criminals and is certainly a bad guy. Sounds a lot like Mr. Wolf! They even dress very similarly.
    • Blitzo is depicted in Lucifer's Folly as a Lethal Chef and is known for making disgusting foods. Come Season 2 of Helluva Boss itself, it is shown he does just that.
    • One of the very first main antagonists in the server was a xenophobic vulture from 1879 Chile named El Condor, the captain of Xibalba's Sector Patrol. Come the global release of Hazbin Hotel on Amazon Prime, and guess what country the Latin Spanish dub was made in.
    • Vroomius Maximus is an expy of Great Z from Series/Doengers and also existing along with Vroomius is his superior Seyrus, who is a police themed hero. Come the fourth season of Dogengers, there actually IS a police themed hero who even bares a striking resemblance to Seyrus.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Cazador is definitely this. He maybe be a grumpy alcoholic but he's had a shitty life since having his father killed, joining a cartel, being disowned by most of his own family (save his grandfather) and has to deal with many bigots and jerkasses who want to beat him up. That's not even getting into the fact that despite his rough exterior, his quest for redemption is genuine.
    • Toby. He may dislike horny demons and be unstable, but one can't help but feel bad for him due to his poor background and being repeatedly pushed around both in life before and in the afterlife that's made him lose it.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: John and Leon's biggest issue was that they're both so horribly unlikeable that people ended up siding for their enemies rather than they themselves. They're more hated than any of the villains, being disliked more than even some utterly monstrous villains like Valentino, Murmur and Mephistopheles due to their schtick being Jerkass mercenaries who make homophobic and racist remarks to other characters (such as Cazador and Snowcone) and are so unpleasant and unrepetant in their crimes that nobody wanted to see them succeed, but just get tossed into the deepest pits of Hell and stay there instead.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: Besides Angel Dust and Alastor of course, Cazador also appears to be becoming this. He's got a lot of fans, both male and female and has been shipped with many characters (even his enemy, Rift fucking Landshark!)
  • Memetic Loser:
    • Leon St. John, due to his tryhard attempts at being deep but coming off as edgy instead, constantly losing to everyone he faces, dying in just about every appearance in RP (and due to the most mundane reasons too), his whininess that puts him into full Wangst territory, his tendency to proclaim himself as some badass only to flee and hide when actually faced with a problem and finally infamously losing to Flamey Von Hardoff at his weakest point.
    • Malthael, chiefly for being a bad Darth Vader ripoff who speaks in really poor Ye Olde English type voice (making him hard to understand instead), boasting some of the most Narmtastic moments in Lucifer's Folly history and coming off more like a pathetic simp than a warrior.
    • Chaz is this in Lucifer's Folly, being depicted as a brainless moron who believes himself to be Hell's "greatest ladies and guysman" and thinks he's some gigachad champion, when in reality he's a complete idiot who fails all the time.
    • Lester Hughlett, aka Heckdoom. He's a massive creep who hasn't won a single fight, and is constantly trying (and failing) to look cool. Also, his voice and costume are annoying.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "Welcome to Hell! Enjoy the buffet." Explanation
    • "Big stinky wolf!" Explanation
    • "WA Hvin" Explanation
    • Anarazel's smug face.
    • Jacob is practically a Fountain of Memes with his Memetic Badass tendencies.
    • The "Vivziepop Ninjas" Explanation
    • "PUPPET HURT MY FEELINGS!" Explanation
    • STOLITZ ALARM Explanation
    • "piss" and its variant "double piss" Explanation
    • "Magnut" Explanation
    • "C H A R A C T E R D E V E L O P M E N T" Explanation
    • "GUN" Explanation
      • "MUH GUNZ!" Explanation
    • "shadow powers" Explanation
    • "VOICES IN MUH HEAD!!!111" Explanation
    • North Korea Explanation
  • Moe: Leonard, not only is he an adorable sheep demon he's also very kind and polite to others, even if they're enemies.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • El Condor crossed it years ago and still crosses it today with his regular brutal and barbaric killings and poor treatment of the people of Xibalba.
    • Lockhart crossed it years ago, but if he didn't back then he certainly crossed it when he tortured Minerva.
    • John crossed it when he tried to shoot Cazador and Alasmore for showing affection towards each other.
      • If he didn't there, he certainly did when he beat up Alex in front of his (Alex's) baby daughter Serena and laughed about it all the way.
    • Leon St. John crossed it when he killed his girlfriend (who could have been saved still) with an angelic weapon. That was no mercy kill, that was murder! Doesn't help either he just forgets about her and instead focuses on becoming the most powerful Overlord in Hell.
      • If he hadn't there, he crossed it later on by revealing he didn't care about the Hotel towards Cazador's face and was just using them for his own gains.
    • Gunhead crossed it when he shot Cazador with an angelic bullet. He may have already well back when he murdered Cazador's father back then.
    • Purr-Vert crossed it when she pretended to be Monty Python's lover, fattened him up, abused him, rigged his fight with Rift Landshark so that he would lose and after he lost, she proceeded to claim that he sexually harassed her, causing Monty Python's reputation to be ruined and then she left him, telling him to go kill himself. Worse, she later admits that she did it not just to help Rift win against Monty Python but also because it amused her.
    • While Jahn Kolone was always a detestable moron, he crosses it firmly when he breaks into Carmilla Carmine's factory and steals some angelic weapons, commits a massive murder spree with his clones in Xibalba with them and kidnaps Ghari, with the intention to destroy Cazador.
    • Vroomius Maximus crossed it when he forced the Hotel gang to partake in one of his liveshow to perform as "kaiju" just so that he could beat them up on live television, starting with beating the crap out of Baxter on stage. Even Bong Mask and Mimi are disturbed by this and it's not even played for laughs.
    • Carmilla crossed this when abducting sinners to create cursed weapons that could kill Angels.
    • Rift Landshark officially crosses it when he forcibly interrogates and beats Ghari up to a pulp and threatens to purge Elena just to get information out of him.
  • More Popular Spin-Off: Hazbin Hotel: Lucifer's Folly is this to the server it was originally spun off from (Hazbins Hell Hotel), which has mainly faded into obscurity. You'd have to have been there (or at least be a HHRP history connieuseur) to even recall anything from it.
  • Narm:
    • From Hazbins Hell Hotel; guns being treated as more powerful than actual demonic powers and magic. It gets to the point of being parodic.
    • John catching lightning with his hands. No way in Hell would that be doable in any setting or context.
    • Often a time a more serious moment will be undercut if the character in question is acting totally out of character in order to make the scene work.
    • All of Evan's attempts at, uh, emotion.
    • Whenever a user has their character unironically spout memes. It just doesn't work.
    • Sometimes whenever a Tupper messes up and gives us a wrong character, it can be this. A notable example is "Human Gavin".
    • Annobath dancing to Gangam Style in the background while Murmur is celebrating on how he possibly killed Charlie. Although to some it can be Narm Charm.
    • Just about anything Delta did. An imp being portrayed as being able to manipulate space and time is just laughable.
    • A lot of examples from Hazbins Hell Hotel could fit in here really, but probably the most obvious example was the fact you had anime characters or sometimes just straight up humans roaming around in a setting that's supposed to be Hell. They stick out like a sore thumb compared to the more cartoony demons and boy it shows.
    • MalthaelExplanation On top of being an obvious Darth Vader ripoff and sticking out like a sore thumb by being very lorebreaking, his attempts at drama were pitifully laughable due to his extremely poor dialogue added with poor grammar, his overusage of the word "m'lady" and having a lightsaber that changes color depending on his mood.
  • Narm Charm:
    • Cheepo reeks of this. By all means, he should be a stupid gimmicky villain, yet he gives it all and is so cheesily entertaining.
    • Vroomius Maximus's name, by all accounts, should be utterly ridiculous and stupid. However, he makes up for it by being an extremely effective antagonist and harkens back to many Tokusatsu heroes from the 90's and such who also had goofy names, so it actually works.
    • Both Captain Blackmore's pirate crew feels like something that wouldn't be out of place from a 1960's cartoon and Raptrice's pirate crew has the look, tone and feel of a Totally Radical 90's cartoon but both of them are so well done that it's just awesome.
  • Never Live It Down:
    • Leon St. John defeating Striker in one punch will most likely not be forgotten anytime soon, as it's still often brought up as an example of how overly OP Leon was or how ridiculously OP a character can be in general. Likewise, Leon actually saying the f-slur to Gavin also won't be forgotten anytime soon due to how offensive it was.
    • John will most likely never live down trying to shoot Alasmore and Cazador for being affectionate to each other and proceeding to be a bigoted asshole load that kept nearly getting the gang into trouble and spewing homophobic comments during their first trip to Xibalba. Additionally, John will also probably never live down the "John catches lightning with his bare hands" moment.
    • Evan Smith suddenly going crazy during an already chaotic scene in Cazador's wedding still gets brought up whenever discussing the character to this day.
    • Hazbins Hell Hotel itself will never be able to live down the rampant "human demons" and coining "Johnclones" that happened during that server in early and mid 2021.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Enough for its own page.
  • Nightmare Retardant:
    • Dr. Daemon can be pretty creepy....unless you are instantly reminded of Larry 3000 which can make him funny looking instead.
    • Jacob the Cat Demon had certain potential to be a frightening villain with his powers and disturbing history....but the fact he speaks in constant lowercase and acts and talks like Eric Cartman just makes him more funny than scary.
    • Leon St. John's threats were probably meant to be scary to a degree, but the way he goes about it, he sounds less like some angry, pissed off, war-torn soldier and sounds more like some edgy, ticked off gamer.
  • Older Than They Think: Believe it or not, Gevaudan Silverwolf and Umbria didn't originate as Hazbin OCs. They originally came from Roleplay/Roleplay Grid, in where Gevaudan was a mechanical wolf gangster leader while Umbria was a shadow alien who fought crime. They weren't made into Hazbin characters until very late in Hazbins Hell Hotel, and then the rest was history.
    • Likewise, Mr. Bullets and Iron Jack 57 were originally robotic henchmen of Gevaudan's back from the RPG days.
    • Flamey Von Hardoff was originally a one-shot villain who existed on RPG as well. Unlike the previous examples listed above, he didn't change much.
    • Minor character Doktor Cog also originated from RPG long before becoming a Hazbin OC in where he was an arc villain.
  • Popular with Furries:
    • Unsurprisingly, Gevaudan Silverwolf has found himself to be very popular with furries, much like Loona herself.
    • Purr-Vert is as well, for obvious reasons.
    • For the scalies, Cazador and Lamashtu are also pretty popular with them.
    • If you're into fishes, Rift Landshark might be your type.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
    • Jamell was originally seen as an OP speedster who was invasive to other plots but once he got the hang of it, now he's considered one of the better humanoid demons and a really fun, cool character who is one of the best Hazbin Hotel Security members, up there with Volk and El Bandito.
    • Monty Python was never really hated per say, but he wasn't initially seen as being all that impressive back then. Cue him going through his character development in the IWF arc, he's now considered a good character and is surprisingly tragic.
    • Umbria used to be seen as an Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist who was unreliable to her friends and too much of a Dirty Coward back on Hazbins Hell Hotel, but she massively improved on Lucifer's Folly and is now considered one of the most iconic characters from Lucifer's Folly.
    • All Melchom, Picollus and Ribesal all used to be wispy strawman demons who opposed Stolas, before later on more recent appearances Melchom and Picollus were actually upgraded to being more menacing (and much more entertaining too, both of them having more funny moments) and Ribesal in particular evolving into a much more complex and cunning villain.
    • Chaz was seen as a pretty unimpressive and run of the mill in Helluva Boss. In Hazbin Hotel: Lucifer's Folly, he's more well liked due to his Stupid Evil being more played for laughs this time around and the fact he's a Butt-Monkey ironically makes him more enduring to some who found the original incarnation to be annoying.
  • Ron the Death Eater:
    • Decarabia is sadly commonly thought to be a villain solely because of his design. The truth is that while he certainly isn't the nicest Goetic Demon around, he's nowhere near as evil as some make him out to be and he most definitely isn't even the worst Goetic Demon (if anything, he's probably one of the most moral).
    • Gavin on Hazbins Hell Hotel. While yes, he is a murderous puppet Jerkass who kills people (albeit in his case it was more Played for Laughs ), the guy wasn't much worse than your average street Sinner. Yet however he was painted as being this unholy ultimate evil monster who needed to be slain at all costs. Averted in Lucifer's Folly however, where Gavin is very well-liked.
  • Seasonal Rot: The later half of the Hazbins Hell Hotel era (January-August 2021) a.k.a Season 2 of Lucifer's Folly (at least the first half anyways) is widely considered the weakest, with duller, cliched and more generic plots (many of which hinged on other characters holding onto the Idiot Ball in order for said plots to work), overpowered and bland new protagonists who not only took over screentime from the already established original characters but even took the spotlight from the canon characters and overall poor quality in entertainment of the R Ps. It got so bad that Gallibon and all of the most active R Pers moved to make their own RP server and where Lucifer's Folly is at today.
  • Tear Jerker: Enough for its own page.
  • The Scrappy: Hell is full of pricks, so understandably not everyone is going to come off smelling like roses. However, their are some characters who stood out worse than others:
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Not on Hazbin Hotel: Lucifer's Folly, but for Hazbins Hell Hotel. Hell was just so messed up (and not in a good way), filled with too much unlikeable Jerkass characters (and the few likeable characters typically always got punished in the most harsh ways), extremely mean-spirited humor, completely idiotic plots and general lack of care and disregard to the source material, it's no wonder many ended up leaving. Gallibon saw this too and decided to make Lucifer's Folly to replace it, also getting rid of any negatives that Dollie's had before it. It's generally considered a massive improvement and while Lucifer's Folly can get dark at times, never to the point of being too grim for the audience.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Samir could have been a decent antagonist and foil to Leon St. John given his backstory of having his family being all murdered by Leon St. John back when he was a soldier. He could have provided some nice story for Leon, giving him more complexity and being an Arch-Enemy of his. All potential interesting conflict is thrown out the window once Samir actually appears, who is depicted as a crazy, cartoonishly evil terrorist instead and only shows up two other times.
    • Leon St. John himself actually could have potentially made a good antagonist if he was better written. He could have served as a perfectly good Evil Counterpart to Cazador. Alas however, he was meant to be seriously treated as a hero.
    • One too many examples to count from Hazbins Hell Hotel. Many time a new and interesting Sinner would have appeared at the Hotel and come with an interesting backstory and history- only to get shafted in favor of more Leon, John and Evan who were running rampant in plots during this time.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Gavin when he used to pitted against Leon St. John. We're supposedly suppose to see Gavin as the villain, but given how Leon St. John proved himself to be even worse, you end up feeling more sorry for Gavin for having to deal with this spineless bully on a regular basis.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Leon in the original "Return to Xibalba" arc. He's supposed to be sympathesized with due to him being hunted by his evil Overlord father, however given he had acted like such a prick beforehand to everyone and committing many of the same crimes as his father (if not even worse so) and fled the Hotel without telling anyone, he comes off as more of a coward who left the Hotel to deal with his problems. Made much worse that when Charlie reveals to him that Hotel has protection from Alastor at all times, meaning him leaving the Hotel and the Hotel gang coming all the way there to rescue him was pointless. Not helping matters is that he seemed to enjoy being at Xibalba, thus there essentially was no problem or stakes at all.
    • Pytho was meant to be pitied given he's an imp therapist who supposedly persecuted, however he's also shown no qualms about killing his own kind for the sake of impressing Sinner women.
  • Unpopular Popular Character:
    • Machigai is hated by just about everyone in-universe, but out of it he's considered one of the funniest gag characters on the site.
    • Dr. Varkreim is also loathed and hated by many in Hell (even fellow Overlords steer clear from him) but he's considered one of the strongest and scariest villains in Lucifer's Folly to date.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Many mistake Snowcone for being female due to his feminine body shape, skimpy clothing and personality. However, Snowcone is male (the biggest indicator of him being male is his voice, which is actually deeper than Angel Dust's or Cazador's).
  • Viewer Species Confusion:
    • Cazador is commonly mistaken to be an iguana, dinosaur, dragon or any other kind of lizard due to his rather vague design. He is actually a crocodile demon.
    • Toby is sometimes mistaken for a Hellborn. He is a Sinner.
    • Leonard was commonly mistaken for a goat up until he was redesigned to look more like a sheep.
  • The Woobie:
    • Zagreus. Despite being a god, the guy is very lonely and always down in the dumps and constantly gets screwed over. You just want to hug the guy.
    • Samantha. She grew up on her own without knowing of her real mother and upon dying had to live in Hell's landscape on her own for fifty years.
