YMMV / Giten Megami Tensei

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: The game as a whole is mostly known for having uncensored sex scenes and copious amounts of nudity.
  • Common Knowledge:
    • It's sometimes claimed that Shin Megami Tensei IV's Demon Whisper mechanic originated in this game. This isn't actually the case — instead, human party members learn magic the same way demons do. Incidentally, IV does borrow a lot of things from Giten — just not that.
    • There were also people claiming that it is an ero-guro game because of an infamous scene of Yuuka being brutally slaughtered and an instance of sex scene. In reality, these are not regular occurences in the game, and said scenes are no worse than what one could see in an R-rated movie.
  • Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game: Giten's story is generally considered to be one of its better parts, with an interesting approach on the series' usual After the End setting. Gameplay, on the other hand, is considered a bit of a slog, and often unreasonably difficult on top of that.
  • Good Bad Bugs: If you enter the Virtual Battler with no equipment, then defeat the boss, you'll keep the equipment you were given.
  • Older Than They Think: A number of demons associated with the franchise's more recent entries, such as Abdiel (mainly known in Shin Megami Tensei V), the Moirae sisters (known from Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne onwards), and Asherah (mainly known from Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey) made their debut in this game.
  • Signature Scene: Yuuka's incredibly gruesome death.
  • That One Boss: The second fight with Dantalian. Even though it occurs almost immediately after the first fight, the difference in power is massive — he's now level 25, and has much more powerful spells that deal triple-digit damage, at a point in the game where your party members are around level 10, and might have around 100 HP with the right equipment. The only thing putting the odds in your favor is the fact that all of his spells are single-target, but that only prevents him from wiping your entire party in one turn.
