YMMV / Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Era: Considered to be the nadir of the Fallout series, at least until Fallout 76, due to the glaring contradictions to Fallout lore and blatant disregard for the series' overall tone and aesthetic.
  • Awesome Music:
  • Bizarro Episode: The entire game in relation to the Fallout series - it's more akin to Dark Alliance gameplay wise as opposed to traditional Fallout RPGs; the soundtrack, which traditionally consists of 20th century hits, was replaced with Nu Metal and Metalcore, likely due to wanting to appear more modern; and the iconic Nuka-Cola was replaced with BAWLS Guarana. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
  • Broken Base: The game had been near universally despised by fans of the series for years, but after Fallout 76 launched in a disastrous state and many decisions behind the scenes led to it becoming Overshadowed by Controversy, fans have debated whether this game or Fallout 76 is the worse of the two. Some still think this one is worse due to all the changes it made to the series that were largely undone in later entries, but some declared that this one isn't nearly as much of an Obvious Beta as Fallout 76.
  • Complete Monster: Jane, the Raider Matron, is reviled even by the super mutants for how much of a violent psychopath she is. Leader of a matriarchal raider gang that virtually controls the town of Carbon, Texas, Jane regularly kidnaps innocent people to sell off as slaves, and lets her men terrorize and murder whomever they want with no restrictions. When the Initiate kills some of her men, Jane orders her men to come upon Carbon and "burn everything that moves, then burn everything that doesn't" to teach them a lesson, beginning the slaughter by having an innocent bartender fried to death just for having been a friend to the Initiate.
  • Critical Dissonance: Most reviews summarized it as a slightly above-average action game, with most scores reaching 6 or 7. Fans of the Fallout series, however, hated it due to how far it departed from the franchise.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • "Fallout: PoS" was and is still a somewhat popular one amongst the game's detractors. More recently, "The Burned Game" has gained some popularity.
    • Some fans jokingly call this game "The Great Unifier," since virtually every Fallout fan hates this game, regardless of wherever they otherwise stand within the fanbase's infamously Broken Base.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: The game was disregarded by fans of the Fallout series well before Bethesda made it official.
  • Only the Creator Does It Right: This game was not made by Black Isle Studios, the guys behind Fallout and 2. Thus, it was to be expected. The end results came out, only to prove that this was the case. Cancelling Fallout: Van Buren in favor of a sequel to this (which also got cancelled) didn't help its case, either.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The primary criticism leveled against the game is that it didn't fit at all into the established Fallout style and setting. The Soundtrack in particular has been criticized for switching out the usual Golden Oldies in favor of Nu Metal and Metalcore tracks. Even a fair amount of Fallout fans who happen to be Metalheads themselves disliked this change.
