YMMV / Charlie and Lola

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: The show is considerably more popular than the books.
  • Adorkable: Lola Sonner, an annoying and eccentric but unfailingly adorable little twerp.
  • Awesome Art: Lauren Child's childlike collage drawings are very charming and imaginative, and the show translates her art style perfectly to animation.
  • Awesome Music: Awesome enough that show had a music album release, although admittedly only across the pond. Notably for a show of this time, a lot of musical material wasn't singing, but rather just music, or spoken scene material from the show set to music. Notable tracks included "Sizzles," a lively tune set to dogs barking and "Bestest in the Barn," which was released as a music video. "Hello, Farmer Lola. Hello, Farmer Lotta. Hello, chicken! We've got a chicken, he lives on our farm, a very clever chicken, bestest in the barn..."
  • Moe: Both Charlie and Lola and their friends...you know what? The entire show is pretty much just Moe!
  • Tear Jerker: "I Will Not Ever Never Forget You Nibbles". The plot is that the duo get a mouse called Nibbles. They both love the little thing, and it shows a montage of all the fun things they did with Nibbles. Sadly, Nibbles dies near the end. When Lola sees Nibbles dead, she just believes he's heavily asleep, but Charlie knows the truth and informs her that the mouse passed away. She goes into a Heroic BSoD because of the mouse's death but learns that death is natural in life. That episode was rated TV-Y.
    • Did we also mention that the episode had a Book Ends? The episode starts with the start of Nibbles becoming a part of the family, and ended with Nibbles dying.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: In some episodes, Lola is supposed to be an utter nuisance and the main source of problems. However, she's still very likeable, since ninety-nine percent of the time she's a very innocent and a somewhat clumsy Nice Girl.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Charlie, with his unisex name, haircut that's identical to his clearly female sister, and high-pitched voice, can easily be mistaken for a girl.
