YMMV / Breaking Benjamin

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Is "I Will Not Bow" about a Determinator who's going to keep fighting even though he knows he's outgunned? Or about a Blood Knight who's so caught up in the battle he'll keep going until he's killed?
    • Quite a lot of the songs can fall into this as Ben leaves the lyrics vague and doesn't like to confirm what songs are about so the listener can form their own opinion.
  • Broken Base:
    • Dark Before Dawn is either seen as a great comeback album or the weakest album with 'samey' songs and a generic style.
    • Saturate is either a great first album with a unique style that people wish they would go back to or others think that it's a bit harsh and prefer later albums a more refined sound.
    • Opinion within the fandom are split on whether the ballads (Forever, Rain, Forget It, The Dark of You) are some of strongest songs or some of the weakest.
  • Epic Riff: "Diary of Jane", "So Cold", "Dance With the Devil"
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With the Three Days Grace fandom, as both have similar styles and are big Fan Vid bait. Fitting, as the two bands have toured together and, on those occasions, Adam (back when he was with 3DG) and Ben would duet on a couple of songs. They later release a cover of "Dance With The Devil" with Adam on their compilation album "Aurora". Interestingly, while Three Days Grace fans tend to like Breaking Benjamin, some Breaking Benjamin fans hold disdain for Three Days Grace.
    • There's a lot of crossover with the Red fandom, as BB's current guitarist, Jasen Rauch, was with Red for their first two albums, Ben Burnley co-wrote the song "Shadows" for Red's Innocence and Instinct album, and like Three Days Grace, BB and Red share similar musical styles.
    • Many Breaking Benjamin fans have also taken a liking to Starset, and many talk about how similar Starset's style is to Breaking Benjamin at times. This is no coincidence as frontman Dustin Bates cited Breaking Benjamin as one of his major influences. During various tours, Dustin was invited to perform "Breath" on stage with them and, on the flip side, Ben has joined him on stage for "My Demons". In 2022, the two bands came together to release a collaboration; "Waiting on The Sky To Change".
    • With fans of the Halo series, due to Halo 2 famously using "Blow Me Away" in the game.
  • Gateway Series: Quite a few metalheads name Breaking Benjamin as one of their first bands.
  • Moment of Awesome: Blow Me Away appearing in Halo 2 (or Halo 2 Anniversary, if you decide to switch to the original soundtrack), halfway through the Gravemind level.
  • Mondegreen: "I will try to find my place in the diarrhea chain".
  • Signature Song: "The Diary of Jane" and "I Will Not Bow". "So Cold," "Blow Me Away," "Breath," "Failure," and "Red Cold River" are the runners up.
  • Tear Jerker: Has its own page.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The "Blow Me Away" remix featuring Valora was not well received, even before it became a top 10 hit on rock stations in mid-2011. The extreme drama the remix brought on did little to ingratiate it to fans.
  • Wangst: Some of their songs slide into this.
