Tear Jerker / Breaking Benjamin

Go To

  • "Anthem of the Angels", which according to Genius.com is about Ben's grandfather dying of Alzheimer's. The lyrics become more and more desperate as Ben begs him to stay alive:

    Days go on forever
But I have not left your side
We can chase the dark together
I can see it in your eyes.
Sing the anthem of the angels and say the last goodbye.
I keep holding on to you, but I can't bring you back to life.
Sing the anthem of the angels and say the last goodbye.
  • "Dear Agony" can be considered one as it can be interpreted as a soldier dying while fighting.
''I will fight for one last breath, I will fight until the end."
''And I will find the enemy within, 'cause I can feel it crawl beneath my skin."
''Dear agony, just let go of me, suffer slowly, is this the way it's got to be?"
''Don't bury me, faceless enemy, I'm so sorry...Is this the way it's got to be? Dear agony..."
    • Up to eleven when you realize that this song (and much of the whole album) is actually about the health problems and regret that came as a result of Ben's earlier drinking issues.
  • "Give Me a Sign" deserves a mention, as it's similar in some ways as "Anthem of the Angels", but it's just as heartbreaking. It can easily be taken as someone desperately keeping a loved one alive, and it's hard to swallow, the chorus and ending especially.
"I can feel you falling away...No longer the lost, no longer the same, and I can see you starting to break."
"I'll keep you alive, if you show me the way, forever, and ever, the scars will remain, I'm falling apart."
"Leave me here forever in the dark."
  • Heck, almost every song on the album Dear Agony can count as this.
  • "Rain, from the album We Are Not Alone. It seems tailor-made for a Cue the Rain or Gray Rain of Depression moment.
  • "Ashes of Eden", another song about losing a loved one.
  • The acoustic version of "Diary of Jane"...good God...
  • "Without You", the final song on Dear Agony, is depressing and can definitely be heartbreaking...
Say something new, I have nothing left,
I can't face the dark without you.
There's nothing left to lose, the fighting never ends,
I can't face the dark without you.
Holding the hand that holds me down,
I forgive you, forget you, the end.
Holding the hand that holds me down,
I forgive you, forget you, the end!
  • "Failure".
Tired of feeling lost, tired of letting go,
Tear the whole world down, tear the whole world down!
Tired of wasted breath, tired of nothing left,
Tear the world down, tear the world down!
  • "Torn in Two", which can be interpreted as Determinator finally on the edge of giving up on the world, but pulls themselves back up at the last minute. It gets sadder when the lyrics are placed in the context of the song's music video, where the protagonist is literally trekking through hell to find his daughter.
I am torn in two, hold on, hold on, we're barely alive
I am faded through, hold on, hold on, the fallen arise
I will fight this war for you, and let the dawn of love survive
Broken, I crawl back to life!
  • "Far Away", a melancholic Power Ballad with lyrics that imply that the narrator is a Death Seeker.
    When the broken fall alive
Let the light take me too
When the waters turn to fire
    Heaven, please let me through
    Far away, far away
    Sorrow has left me here
    Far away, far away
Let the light take me in
  • "Angels Fall"
I tried to face the fight within
    But it's over
I'm ready for the riot to begin and surrender
I walked the path, it led me to the end, remember
I'm caught beneath with nothing left to give, forever
When angels fall with broken wings
    I can't give up, I can't give in
When all is lost and daylight ends
I'll carry you and we will live forever, forever
  • Then there's "Unknown Soldier."sniff...
    Show me what is like
To dream in black and white
So I can leave this world tonight.
  • "You" is about regretting substance abuse and wanting a significant other to move on and have a better life without them.

My hands are broken, and time is going on and on, it goes forever.
So I got high and lived all that life that I've taken all for granted.
Promise me you'll try to leave it all behind, 'cause I've left in hell, lying to myself. Why have I gone blind, living all the life. You.
Forgive me, my love, I stand here all alone, and I can see the bottom.
