YMMV / Boomerang (1992)

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Features one of the best R&B soundtracks of The '90s, including breakout hits, "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men, "Die Without You" by PM Dawn, and "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" by Toni Braxton.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Lady Eloise has become a fan-favorite for such a minor part of the movie.
  • Funny Moments: It's a comedy with laughs all over the damn place, but the standout moments are Marcus' very sad little, "...can you make it just a little darker?" when he's about to sleep with Lady Eloise, John Witherspoon's One-Scene Wonder moment at dinner, and then Strange's "essence of sex" speech, complete with her taking off her panties and rubbing them all over the poor guy's face to emphasize her point.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Marcus apologizing to Gerard and sharing a hug is already sweet on its own, but it shoots up tenfold when Bony T joins in on it, and the three go back inside to eat dinner.
  • Hollywood Homely:
    • Angela, played by Halle Berry, is treated like this in comparison to Jacqueline, just because she wears less sexy clothes than Jacqueline. However, as the movie progresses, and Angela switches to becoming the love interest, her clothing becomes much more attractive.
    • Eartha Kitt is treated as too old to be hot, but she’s still Eartha Kitt!
  • Memetic Mutation: "Marcus, darling. I don't have any panties on."
  • One-Scene Wonder: John Witherspoon as Gerard's father, only appearing at dinner at Marcus's house, where he greatly embarrasses his son with his raunchy personality and his need to keep his clothing coordinated is one of the most funniest scenes of the movie
  • Values Dissonance: One of the throwaway jokes early on involves a 976 number allegedly staffed by pre-op transwomen.
  • Vindicated by History: Boomerang was initially met with mixed reviews and was considered a part of Eddie Murphy’s (first) Audience-Alienating Era, which went from Harlem Nights (1989) to The Nutty Professor (1996). In the decades since, Boomerang has come to be viewed as one of the best African-American romantic comedies and provided breakout performances for Halle Berry and, on the soundtrack, Toni Braxton.
  • Why Would Anyone Take Him Back?: Seriously, Marcus' actual epiphany that he's in love is that he realized it after cheating on his girlfriend with another woman he was hung up on. Even for what both of them claim is true love, there is no reason someone as kind as Angela should accept a schmuck like that back into her personal life.
