  • Actor-Inspired Element: John Witherspoon picked his outlandish wardrobe himself and improvised his lines.
  • Breakthrough Hit: The soundtrack's lead single "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" (based on a quote from Angela in the movie) was Toni Braxton's solo debut; it became a hit and made her a star.
  • California Doubling: Near the production's end, some scenes that still needed to be shot were done in Washington, D.C., where Eddie Murphy was also shooting The Distinguished Gentleman.
  • Enforced Method Acting: Halle Berry really slapped Eddie Murphy.
  • Star-Making Role: For Halle Berry.
  • Wag the Director:
    • John Witherspoon's scenes were added after filming had wrapped. Eddie Murphy demanded that scenes with Witherspoon be added to the film.
    • Eartha Kitt was reluctant to take the role of Lady Eloise because she found some of her lines offensive. The lines were deleted from the script.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The film was originally intended to end with Marcus, Gerald and Tyler hugging on top of the roof. The studio, however, felt the need for Marcus to make things right with Angela after his whole dilemma.
    • Originally, some of the film was to take place in the Caribbean, and scenes were to be shot there. However, the setting was changed to New Orleans, and the scenes taking place there were shot in D.C.
    • Vanessa Williams was considered for the role of Jacqueline.
    • "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" was originally meant for Anita Baker, but she was pregnant at the time and on hiatus from performing.
  • Write Who You Know: Reginald Hudlin based Marcus' obsession with women's feet on a friend of his who would not date a woman if he did not like their back teeth.
    • At one point, the script was written with Arsenio Hall in mind.
