  • Angst? What Angst?:
    • Dog Hummer is surprisingly cheerful and polite despite how, even though he's an innocent man who has to be confined within the most secure prison in Hellsalem's Lot because he was forced to share a body with a serial killer. This is on top of the fact he’s still being held despite being able to control him for the most part.
    • The residents of Hellsalem's Lot in general are rather apathetic to all the chaos around them when they aren't directly being threatened. One episode ended with a giant tank being destroyed, with debris causing massive destruction. In a voice-over narration, Leo casually states that hundreds of thousands were killed from it while a light jazz tune plays in the background. And it never comes up again.
      • This is hilarious on a meta level because Helsalem's Lot is Manhattan after it became a place that connected to alternate dimensions, and New Yorkers are famous for shrugging off and ignoring the odd behaviors of their more colorful fellows.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The ending song "Sugar Song and Bitter Step" by Unison Square Garden is ridiculously funny, very funky, and just plain fun. It's also a contender for the best ED theme of 2015.
    • The opening theme, "Hello, world!" by industry heavyweights Bump of Chicken ain't nothing to scoff at either.
    • The new opening song, "Fake Town Baby" (by Unison Square Garden) & especially the ending song, "Step Up LOVE" (by DAOKO & Yasuyuki Okamura) count as this.
    • Hell, even some BGM are awesome!
    • Leo's Leitmotif Tortoise Knight is sung from the point of view of his little sister and just an excellent fusion of Jazz and R&B.
  • Broken Base: Season 1's overreaching arc with White/Black divided fans, as some felt that adding filler took away screen-time that could've been devoted to adapting more of the source material, while others felt it helped connect the series and that White and Black's story was enjoyable in itself. This contrasts with opinions of Season 2, which sticks to the episodic format for the manga. Though seen as enjoyable, some fans critique the apparent lack of an overall story arc, compared to Season 1.
  • Complete Monster (2015 Anime Season 1): Blank, the "King of Despair", is an otherworldly entity that has caused countless tragedies for thousands of years. Possessing the body of a teenage boy, Blank manipulates the boy's sister into bringing him the hero, Leonardo "Leo" Watch, so his can use Leo's magical eyes for his master plan, promising to leave her brother's body if she does so. As soon as she does, Blank goes back on his promise, fatally shooting her and revealing that he intends to use Leo's eyes to destroy the barrier around the city of Hellsalem's Lot that keeps Earth from being torn apart by an alternate dimension. When his ally accuses Blank's apocalypse of being too dull, Blank responds by telepathically throwing around buildings and summoning a horde of zombies, looking on with delight as the terrified citizens are slaughtered.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Despite being a Canon Foreigner, White's popular for her fun character and in-depth relationship with Leonardo.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • "Dick Suck" for Zapp, after his introduction card in episode 2.
    • Episode 6 has been called the "Burger Episode" by several fans, given that Leonardo bonded with Nej through cheeseburgers.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Zapp/Chain gets a lot of fans due to their antagonistic relationship. However, with Season 2, many have jumped on Chain/Stephen for Chain's Adorkable crush.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With Nightow's other works, Trigun and Gungrave.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • The entrance of Libra's hideout has the Chinese character 福 (read: fú; translation: fortune) written upside-down. In Eastern culture, having the said letter written upside-down on a door or the entrance of a house means welcoming good fortune.
    • 五里霧中, which appears on a sign momentarily at the start of episode 12, means "to lose one's bearings" or "in a fog" in Japanese and Chinese. The focus of the dialogue right after the sign is shown is about how the fog barrier is inpenetrable and Leo has lost his bearings at the time the sign appears.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: When realizing many of the voice actors worked together on Gintama:
    • It seems Shinpachi has finally upgraded from bland glasses holder support character to protagonist All Seeing God Eyes. Doesn't mean he gets the short end of the stick any less.
    • And he still has a close relationship with an an other worldly pale girl.
    • Katsura ja nai, Femt Lord of Depravity da!
    • With her ability to track and instantly get to a location, let's just say it's good that Chain isn't a stalker like Sarutobi.
    • Hijikata is inheriting Gintoki's characteristics. Bonus points for awesomeness.
    • Neptune Shoukaku is now the main character and still awesome as ever.
  • LGBT Fanbase: Klaus is extremely popular with Bara Genre fans due to his looks and his gentlemanly personality which many of them find to be Moe.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Femt, the "King of Depravity", is a Beyondian with a taste for both destruction and fair-play and the surprisingly laidback and friendly Big Bad of the series. A brilliant scientist, Femt regularly threatens the city of Hellsalem's Lot with his demonic creations, while always leaving humanity a fighting chance: at one point summoning a demon while giving the chance for a riddle-like choice to allow for its defeat. In another outing, Femt deploys a demon able to multiply and consume all in its path but purposefully gives them a short lifespan to keep them from being unbeatable. Quick to recover from his faux-tantrums when bested and fond of his fellow Kings, Femt proves himself a hilarious, hammy and even graceful villain.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • The ending sequence featuring the characters dancing in front of a stage is ripe for parody by replacing them with characters from other series.
    • With both the opening theme and final episode being named "Hello, World!", a lot of people have taken to making programming jokes and sharing their "Hello, world!" applications on message boards and forums.Explanation
    • X! X! Double X! Explanation
  • Narm Charm: The ending of episode 6 should be awkward with Leo crying over cheeseburgers after forgetting Nej, but Nej's tragic backstory and his ability to erase people's memories of him after difficult circumstances caused many viewers to cry along with Leo.
  • Nightmare Fuel: There is a reason Zapp is terrified and humbled by Steven. We catch a glimpse of it in Season 2, when he freezes an entire house party of would be assassins, and two lumbering Humanoid Abomination things lurch out of the shadows. He casually quips that he’s not acting under his Libra authority because what he’s doing is worse than killing them, and Klaus wouldn’t allow it. The only normal member of the wetworks team tells Steven to take a brisk walk; that’s all the time they need. The camera cuts away as the Humanoid Abomination hitmen wrap their hands around a screaming female assassin. We never see what they did to them but his appartment is both empty and spotless afterwards. In a show that loves Gorn, that makes it worse.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Femt and Black barely appear in Season 2 of the anime, despite being regular characters in Season 1. However, Black's absence is explainable. With a director switch between seasons, the series shifted to being a more straightforward adaptation of the manga, where Black does not exist.
    • Dr. Luciana Estavez is introduced as a potential addition to Libra, having a unique power complete with Calling Her Attacks in Latin to reflect their medical training... and they participate in all of one fight scene in all of Season 2, and have maybe three or four lines of dialog in the season outside of their introductory episode.
  • Ugly Cute:
  • The Woobie: Nej! All he wants is burgers...
