Western Animation / Daffy's Inn Trouble

Go To

Daffy's Inn Trouble is a 1961 Looney Tunes theatrical short directed by Robert McKimson, starring Daffy Duck and Porky Pig.

On the western frontier, Daffy and Porky work in a hotel, which Porky owns, while Daffy is a janitor, which he does not seem to enjoy at all, as he complains about sweeping up constantly. When Porky gives Daffy a new broom for a present, Daffy feels insulted and quits on the spot. He then decides to start his own competing hotel, right across the street from Porky's. Needless to say, Daffy keeps having difficulty running his hotel. Porky's hotel is not suffering, so Daffy tries to take ever more drastic measures to run Porky out of business.

Tropes:

  • Bowdlerization: Many TV airings, such as on Cartoon Network, TNT and the defunct WB! network, would censor, in some way, shape or form, Daffy attempting to become partners with Porky, and when the latter refuses, Daffy retaliating by declaring a Western-type war on him, only to shoot himself with his own gun.
    • While WB used a fake black-out after the part where Daffy tries to get the gun from his holster, TNT and Cartoon Network used a fake dissolve to the next scene (where Daffy uses a boulder to crush Porky's hotel) after Daffy says, "Well, are we partners?" and Porky says, "N-n-no". As of 2004, the cartoon aired uncensored on Cartoon Network, although the channel once temporarily aired the censored version in 2012 out of sensitivity over the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Boomerang and MeTV currently airs the cartoon uncensored.
  • Gone Horribly Right: When his attempt to crush Porky's business with a boulder fails, resulting in his own business being flattened instead, Daffy goes into Porky's place to blow it up from the inside with dynamite placed under the floor boards. He succeeds in leveling the place, but the destruction results in Porky striking oil. Though Porky's establishment is ruined by the explosion and gushing oil, it allows him to build a better and bigger, five-star hotel, where Daffy is working as a janitor again.
  • Metaphoric Metamorphosis: Daffy's attempt to put Porky out of business by crushing his establishment with a boulder backfires, as it crushes his own establishment instead. In response, Daffy's head turns into that of a donkey, braying as it does.
  • Produce Pelting: When Daffy's would-be customers see he's not a real dancing girl, they pelt him with tomatoes.
Daffy: Boy, what a bunch of soreheads!
  • Punny Title: The title refers to the phrase "Daffy's in trouble".
  • Repetitive Audio Glitch: When he spots more customers at Porky's establishment than his own, Daffy discovers it's because it has dancing girls. So Daffy tries to lure the customers back by dressing as a dancing girl himself, lip-synching to a song on a carefully-hidden record. At first, it seems to work, as the customers are impressed — until the record starts skipping, revealing Daffy as a phony.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The cartoon opens with Daffy complaining about sweeping up, and when Porky, his boss, gives him a new broom for a present, Daffy considers this such an insult that he quits Porky's hotel right then and there.
  • Start My Own: The plot revolves around Daffy, feeling mistreated by Porky, quitting Porky's hotel and starting his own hotel business out of revenge.
Porky: All that j-j-just because I gave him a p-p-present...
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: When Daffy sees that the reason for Porky's hotel's success is because it has dancing girls, he tries to lure customers to his hotel by dressing as a dancing girl himself. His success is short-lived, however.
    • He does it again when he decides to blow up Porky's hotel with dynamite. He disguises himself as a woman to hide the dynamite under his dress and then goes inside to pose as a customer for Porky.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: Porky barely does anything in the short and ends up with a 5 star hotel while Daffy's attempts at gaining customers and sabotaging his hotel backfires.
