Blue's Big Musical Movie was the first film in the Blue's Clues franchise, released in 2000 direct to video. It was released on VHS and DVD on October 3, 2000. The film also aired on television, beginning with a primetime premiere on January 13, 2002.

The plot follows the Yellow House residents as they organize a musical that will be seen by the entire neighborhood called "You Can Be Anything You Wanna Be" show, where everyone gets to sing about what they want to be when they grow up. Blue and Tickety Tock are doing a duet about being teachers, but while showing off their performance to everyone, Tickety's loses her voice. So, she decides to ring her bells during the performance instead, leaving Blue with no partner. We play Blue's Clues to find out who Blue thinks should be her New partner.
  • Animation Bump: The movie for the most part averts it due to mainly looking the same as the rest of the series, but also uses several alternate angles and zoom effects never shown in the episodes themselves.
  • Anthropomorphic Typography: A new character is introduced in the Skidoo Segment of the movie, a G-clef named G-Clef, who teaches Steve how to write music. He also has several friends who are singing music notes with faces.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: Here it is revealed for the first time that Sidetable Drawer is a very talented singer (which becomes a major part of her personality from that point on), and several characters comment on it.
  • BSoD Song:
    • Steve gets "As Smart As You" about how he can never find the clues on his own and needs the viewers to help him. A longer, different version of the song is used on the soundtrack than the one used in the movie
    • Sidetable wins "Sidetable Lament" where she sings about her inability to express her wishes to her friends.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This film is that for Sidetable Drawer, this is the first time she is seen interacting with other characters, having her personality deepened and having her first plot focus. Here we find out about her musical talent, her shyness and see her overcome her Shrinking Violet personality.
  • Deconstruction: The movie deconstructs how the kids always found the clues with Steve's subplot about finding a clue all by himself and the frustration that Steve gets when he's unable to do it himself. Thankfully, everyone cheers him up to continue and he finds the last clue all by himself.
  • Episode Tagline: "When something goes wrong, don't give up- just go on”
  • Heroic BSoD: Both Steve, Periwinkle, Sidetable and Slippery Soap have one for different reasons.
    • Steve because he realizes that he is in fact very dependent on the viewer and has never found a single clue on his own since he met the viewer. After the viewer finds the first two clues on their own, Steve goes into a depressive state and sings a BSoD Song about how he wishes he was as smart as the Viewer.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Deconstructed. On the series Sidetable is shown to be very talented at whatever they are playing with that day but usually prefers to stay in the corner and just keep the host's notebook while the others go on adventures. Here it is revealed that the reason Sidetable never participates in adventures with the rest of the group is because she is too shy to express her desires to join. As she is unable to vocalize her wishes Steve just thinks she's just happy being an assistant.
  • Innocently Insensitive: The source of Sidetable and Periwinkle's plot is that Steve is so busy with the musical and wanting to find his first clue that he accidentally ignores Sidetable and Periwinkle's visible sadness, hurting them both in the process.
  • "I Want" Song: Sidetable Drawer gets two. "Sidetable's Lament" is a more downbeat song about how she wants to be in the show but wishes she wasn't so shy. She later sings the more upbeat "Sing!" to Steve, to tell him that she wants to sing in their music show.
  • The Klutz: Mr. Salt keeps having trouble making cookies, which keeps distracting Steve.
    • First, when Sidetable is attempting to ask Steve if she can sing in the You-Can-Be-Anything-You-Wanna-Be show;
Sidetable: Steve! I have something to ask you.
Steve: (walks over to Sidetable) Yes, Sidetable?
Sidetable: Well, uh... I want to, uh... (tsk) (begins blushing) Could I...uh...—
Mr. Salt: (from the kitchen) Steve, Steve! (sound of opening a cabinet is heard) I can't find the flour!
Steve: (turns to the kitchen) Try the bottom shelf. (some more kitchen noises are heard, Steve turns back over to Sidetable) Sorry. What did you wanna say?
Sidetable: Well, um.... (blushes again, begins nudging one of her legs) You see... I wanted to—
Mr. Salt: (from the kitchen) STEVE!
Steve: (turns to the kitchen again) Just one second. (turns over to Sidetable)
      (one second later)
      (crash)
Mr. Salt: (from the kitchen) Uh-oh... (clattering sounds)
(Steve turns to the screen, and then to the kitchen, Sidetable looks over with an agape mouth)
Steve: Um...I better go help Mr. Salt in the kitchen. (Sidetable nods)
Mr. Salt: (from the kitchen) Oh no!
      (crash, spilled liquid is heard)
      Mr. Salt: Sacré bleu!
Steve: (turns to the viewers) Will you wait here with Sidetable Drawer?
Mr. Salt: Better get a mop!
Steve: Great. (turns to Sidetable) I'm sorry, uh... hold that thought, I'll be right back. (runs to the kitchen)
    • The second instance is when Periwinkle is trying to show one of his tricks to Steve;
Periwinkle: Steve, Steve! I want to show you something!
Steve: Hey, Perry. What do you want to show us?
(Mr. Salt hops to the kitchen window, where Steve and Periwinkle outside)
Mr. Salt: Uh...Excuse me, Steve. Where are the chocolate chips?
Steve: Oh. There's on the bottom shelf.
(Mr. Salt hops into the kitchen)
Steve: (turns to Periwinkle) Sorry, Periwinkle. Go ahead.
      (some cabinets are heard)
Periwinkle: (covers himself with a cape) Peri, Pocus, Ocus—
Mr. Salt: (from the kitchen) Where, Steve??
Steve: (turns to Mr. Salt) Bottom shelf. (turns over to Periwinkle)
      (some clanging is heard)
Periwinkle: ... Peri, Pocus, Ocus, Cr—
Mr. Salt: (from the kitchen) What did you say?!
Steve: (turns to Mr. Salt) Bottom shelf. (turns over to Periwinkle again)
      (some more clanging is heard)
Periwinkle: (starting to get annoyed) PERI, PO
Mr. Salt: (from the kitchen) Steve, where?!
(crash, a canister lid is seen sliding on the floor)
Mr. Salt: (from the kitchen) (to himself) Oh, no...
  • Lost Voice Plot: Tickety (Blue's partner in the musical) loses her voice because she had to scream to wake Steve up at the beginning of the film. We play Blue clues to find out who can replace her.
  • That's All, Folks!!: The movie ends with Blue holding up a cardboard card reading "Thanks for coming to Blue's Big Musical" as she barks out "Thanks for coming!" right before the credits start. At the end of the credits, another card reading "Bye bye" appears as Blue barks it out
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Well, technically the human. Steve suddenly realizes that he's never found a clue on his own without the help of the kids. He's sorely depressed about this fact until he looks inside of a box (that the camera can't see in) and realizes—there's a clue in there! He found it himself!
  • Triumphant Reprise: Throughout the Movie, Sidetable Drawer sings "Sidetable's Lament" about how she wants to sing in the musical, but is too shy to ask. When she and Periwinkle come up with a way to get Steve's attention, she sings a more upbeat version of the song about how she's definitely going to ask Steve this time and sing in the show.
