Provides examples of:

  • A-Cup Angst: Min Hua, in part because she's self-conscious about her height and has an older sister (Xui Mei) who is more "gifted".
  • All Lesbians Want Kids: Xiu Mei, bothered by her sister being bisexual, uses the fact that Min Hua has expressed a desire for children to try and convince her not to go after Rei romantically, partly so she doesn't have to worry about continuing their family line.
  • The Beard: Ash asks a guy to a dance to throw off suspicion about her and Sarah.
  • Big Eater: Min Hua makes a joke about Rei being this while shopping at one point.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Min Hua and Rei do this in an April Fools update lampshading how they haven't appeared in a while (since the prologue).
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Sarah and Ash, whose parents have been friends (and apparently polyamorous lovers) for years.
  • Cliffhanger: The prologue finally ends with Min Hua about to confess to Rei.
  • Demonic Possession: Derrick Franklin is possessed by the entity he made contact with after he disagrees with its methods.
  • D-Cup Distress: Rei is sometimes annoyed by her bust getting in the way when fighting, and even says that she would gladly trade it for Min Hua' smaller size.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Sarah has no idea what she's going to do after high school.
  • Emotion Eater: Sarah and Ash encounter an entity that feeds off of human fear.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Sarah, being a track star and athlete before getting her powers.
  • Everybody Knew Already: Sarah and Ash's mothers, at the very least, knew that they were seeing each other for a while.
    • This turns out to be because Ash's mom made her promise to tell her if she slept with anyone. Sarah doesn't know this yet.
  • Genre Shift: The story's prologue focuses entirely on Min Hua and Rei's developing relationship through Rei's yearly visits, but the first chapter introduces sci-if/fantasy elements.
  • Green-Eyed Redhead: Rei.
  • Happily Adopted: Rei was found abandoned as a child by her father.
  • Heir Club for Men: Min Hua and her older half Xui Mei sister were sent to the country where the census isn't as enforced because their father wanted to remarry and try again for a son. Min Hua takes the absence of a third sister as a sign that he finally got one.
  • Instant Expert: Rei can pick up aspects of a martial arts style from simple observation, though she still needs training to master it.
  • Invisible to Normals: There are numerous supernatural beings that cannot normally be seen by humans.
  • MST3K Mantra: In-Universe, Min Hua says this after introducing Rei to Harry Potter and she starts questioning things.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Rei is a bit touchy, and has been told so. Min Hua even thinks it's part of why she's had trouble with unwanted attention and proposals from male martial artists she's been training with a few times.
  • Playing with Fire: Sarah gains the ability to manifest a sort of blue ethereal fire.
  • Polyamory: Sarah and Ash's parents.
  • Sarashi: Rei uses a bandage one instead of a bra at the start, though mainly because she's injured. She's relieved when she can take it off because, even if they get in the way when fighting, them constantly being bound was unpleasant.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Sarah had no idea that her and Ash's moms knew about their relationship.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Min Hua looks a lot like her paternal grandmother.
  • Super-Empowering: Sarah gets Playing with Fire Powers from the entity that possessed Derrick.
  • The Talk: Ash's mother gave her one after learning that she slept with Sarah.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The entity Derrick Franklin contacts apparently has a goal he agrees with to some degree, but methods he does not.
