Web Video / Deltarune VHS

Go To

Nyctomatter's Deltarune VHS series is an Analog Horror series that's based off the titular game Deltarune. Many of the videos are inspired by scenes from the game, however a lot of them are injected with heaps of added Realism-Induced Horror, Surreal Horror, and general Nightmare Fuel. The channel has gained a sudden influx of subscribers upon the release of the first video, and the channel now sits at around 25 thousand subscribers.

Deltarune VHS contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: While it's more of an Ambiguous Situation in Deltarune, Deltarune VHS Sans is shown to be completely aware of what you did back in Undertale and that Frisk and the player are not the same person.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Berdly is not the smug asshole he was in the original Deltarune, which makes his fates in both "SNOWGRAVE" and "BERDLY" both depressing and horrifying.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the original Deltarune, Queen simply asks you to get a banana off the road in the car sequence. In Deltarune VHS, she gets Kris to run over and kill someone.
  • Analog Horror: The premise, though "KRIS 2" plays this trope the straightest, with Toriel inspecting her car only to see a soulless Kris next to it, then she runs for her door.
  • And I Must Scream: Berdly's fate in "SNOWGRAVE": after Noelle has frozen him, Kris locks him in the computers' room closet, potentially paralyzed but aware of his fate.
  • Berserk Button: Taking Ralsei’s glasses seems to be one, if “RALSEI” is any indication.
  • Crossover: With "Character X is Bad! (Here's Why)", another one of Nyctomatter's series, in the form of Freeze-Frame Bonus Art Shift Hostile Show Takeovers
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • After Spamton's strings are cut in "SPAMTON NEO", the strings connecting his individual body parts are cut as well. We don't actually see them, but the fact they are censored in the first place tells us everything we need to know.
    • After the video glitches out in "ROUXLES", there's a splashing noise, followed by a censored object with blood leaking from it being shown. It's pretty much confirmed from the Madness Mantra that appears on the screen that said censored object is the remains of Rouxls after he fell into the acid.
  • Death by Despair: Played for Laughs in "NUBERT". After Kris tells Nubert he sucks, Nubert proceeds to shoot off a bunch of insults that not only shame Kris to death, but leave their corpse with a horrified grimace.
  • Deliberate VHS Quality: Alongside the deliberately bad quality pictures and slowed down music tracks, there are VHS effects like blurred lines, smashes to black and Static Screw.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Queen has a surprisingly deep voice in the banana short.
  • Eye Scream / Facial Horror:
    • In "SPAMTON NEO", Ralsei has a massive hole through his face.
    • In "BERDLY", Berdly removing the control plug tears the skin off of his face alongside his beak and eyes, since that was what it had attached to.
    • Kris' face in "KRIS 2" is extremely reminiscent of Chara's decomposing face at the end of a No Mercy run.
    • In "RALSEI", Ralsei's face has blank scleras with blood around them.
    • In "SPAMTON'S CALL", Spamton's face is almost completely darkened, except for both of his eyes.
    • In "SANS", Sans switches to a distorted version of himself from when you killed him in the No Mercy route.
    • In "SPAMTON'S SHOP", only Spamton's mouth and eyes are shown, and both of those facial features are unnervingly large.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You:
    • "KRIS" starts with Kris tearing their own heart out of their body, then smiling to the viewer before grabbing both sides of the screen to exit the video.
    • "MAN BEHIND THE TREE" starts with the titular man giving an egg to Kris before telling them to turn it around: it is written "Can't run". At this precise moment, the screen becomes monochrome, with the Mystery Man filling it to chase the viewer shortly after.
    • "TASQUE MANAGER" starts with the eponymous character asking Kris about the paintings, then she asks questions about home safety and death while making clear she isn't asking Kris, but rather the person watching. Then there's audible breathing noises.
  • Gainax Ending: "SNOWGRAVE" ends with Kris locking the closet after having put an X-Ray bird inside it, potentially Berdly.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Several of the videos ("Kris, get the banana" and "SPAMTON NEO", as two examples) contain censored scenes where you can only see blood.
  • Irony: Susie, the only one who canonically has a Nightmare Face, is the most normal-looking character in the videos.
  • Jump Scare: Screamer Pranks are averted as much as possible, considering the content, but there are still small ones which manage to merge this trope with the most durable horror.
    • "POPPUP" plays it for laughs: after the titular Mook activates a pop-up and Kris closes it, a poorly-drawn Bedsheet Ghost comes out saying "Bruh", leaving Kris traumatized.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Inverted with Jevil. The series is pure horror up until he makes a Yo Momma joke, after which the series bounces between horror and comedy at an unpredictable pace.
  • Madness Mantra:
    • "SPAMTON" doubles this trope with Broken Record when he begs Kris to:
      "Accept the deal."
    • In "SPAMTON NEO", he repeats another sentence three times:
      "You didn't accept the deal."
      • Then, after Kris cuts his strings, another phrase covers the whole screen:
    • When Berdly is paralyzed in the closet during "SNOWGRAVE", he attempts to convince himself that it's just a dream and "it will be just fine".
  • Mood Whiplash: Mixed in with all the horror are almost just as many comedy segments, like "JEVIL," "What happened to Kris?" and "STARWALKER." Generally, they all start similar to the horror episodes, making it that much harder to see it coming when the tone flips.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Many videos end this way to lengthen the experience after you close them, and every Gory Discretion Shot is played for this too.
    • It's never explained how or why Ralsei has a hole in his face in "SPAMTON NEO".
    • The lack of an ending in "KRIS 2" is played for this, simply cutting out after a few shots that zoom in onto a white door.
    • It's never explained why Papyrus has lost his skull in "PAPYRUS?".
  • Only Sane Woman: Susie seems to be the only character who has normal reactions to the surreal events happening in these videos.
  • Slasher Smile / Nightmare Face:
    • Queen in "Kris, get the banana."
    • Kris in "KRIS" and even more in "KRIS 2". They also do another one in "HOSPITAL".
    • Tasque Manager takes a progressively sinister one in "TASQUE MANAGER".
    • Swatchlings do this to intruders who break their precious vases in "SWATCHLING".
    • Sans' mutilated No Mercy Route form has him sport one during "SANS".
    • Spamtonnote  pulls off a horrifying one at the end of "SPAMTON'S SHOP".
    • "TEMMIE" starts with the eponymous monster showing a blank face, then a darkened face with eyes only.
  • Suddenly Voiced:
  • Survivor Guilt: "NOELLE" implies that the deer girl lives this every day.
  • Uncanny Valley: This trope is combined with the deranged art style to give the impression that the series melts with reality.
    • In "Kris, get the banana", Queen has disturbingly realistic teeth inside her large mouth.
    • "SNOWGRAVE" ends with a shot of Berdly's skeleton in the closet, which looks like a real bird's.
    • At the end of "KRIS", the teenage human has bloody eyes.
    • In "TASQUE MANAGER", the titular character's final shot displays her with realistic eyes while they were only pitch black before.
  • Wham Shot: The scaring factor comes a lot from these shots which act like Jumpscares, revealing something that shouldn't be there or that is missing. For example, in "PAPYRUS?", after Sans denies having a brother, we soon pan to Papyrus himself... but then it soon reveals that he has no skull.
  • You Are Already Dead: You when Tasque Manager asks you uncomfortable questions.
