WMG / The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You

Go To

WARNING: Per wiki policy, Wild Mass Guessing is for theories about future developments, so all spoilers are unmarked.

    Future Girlfriends
The 100th girlfriend will be a Yandere.
And thus, the Final Boss of the series. She would not accept the idea of sharing Rentarou with anyone else, and try to bump off the other girls, only for Rentarou to stop her. Since every character is a Deconstructed Character Archetype, the yandere would not be doing it solely out of jealousy and Ax-Craziness, but because she suffers from serious psychological problems that have never been properly addressed, which she would break down and reveal in a Motive Rant once Rentarou confronts her. He says they can work through this together, and all the other girls say they'll do it too, and she is temporarily pacified. The last chapter would have a Time Skip, and see the would-be yandere getting along with the other girls, after spending some time in therapy.

One of Rentarou's girlfriends will be a government official.
In order to make Polyamory in Japan legal, so that Rentarou can Marry Them All.

Some of Rentarou's girlfriends will be non-human.
How else is he going to reach one hundred? Besides, there's already a Love God, so who's to say other non-humans don't exist?

Following up on the above: one or more of Rentarou's girlfriend will have some kind of Me's a Crowd ability.
They could be anything from a Shadow-Cloning ninja to a self-dividing alien species - the important thing is that they'll offer just enough extra bodies to fill the count all the way up to 100 (or 99, assuming the author is saving the 100th for something genuinely important).
  • If the author really wants to throw a curveball, it may well be one "normal" girl with a serious case of Split Personality.

One of Rentarou's girlfriends will be a crossdresser.
Whether it be of the Otokonoko or Sweet Polly Oliver variety, it would explore how others perceive them as "girlfriends" and if they consider themselves as such.

The Vice Principal will become one of Rentarou's girlfriends.
And she'll either turn out to be Beautiful All Along, or be the Ugly Wife to his Hot Guy.

The 100th girlfriend will be you, the reader.
Having witnessed Rentarou successfully maintain 99 girlfriends, you realize that the story will soon end when he encounters #100. However, if you become #100, you'll be able to continue enjoying the story of Rentarou's Family because you'd have intimate knowledge of everyone's character and can fantasize about two things: how everyone would welcome and support you just as they have welcomed and supported each other, and how you and everyone's lives would continue long after Rentarou's high school life ends (the God of Love's blessing was that Rentarou would meet his 100 girlfriends during his time in high school). You'd also be the opposite of Asakawa, Rentarou's 100th rejection: she was a Bit Character who rejected him because she couldn't possibly see him as a lover, but you have seen how wrong she was.

It would be one heck of a callback to Rentarou starting his high school life: "sense of reality ain't worth a damn", indeed.

  • As an offshoot of this, the last chapters will be done in first-person POV to represent how it feels to join Rentarou's Family not through the eyes of another character but simply as yourself.
  • Alternatively, the manga ends with Rentarou looking at the reader and the final zing, with the final volume epilogue showing his catchphrase one last time: "And so, due to how things panned out, would you guys mind accepting (the reader) as my newest girlfriend...?!"
  • Problem: how could the reader be represented in the final volume cover (front and back) if they're expected to be paired up with #99?
    • #99 will have the "final" character arc, the front cover will show #99 with a mirror, and the back cover will show both #99 and Rentarou holding up the mirror to the reader and looking at it together (giving the image of them looking at each other and the reader).
    • The pair counts were thrown off by Kusuri’s dual-aged forms being paired together; as things stand currently, #100 would have a cover all to herself.

One of the "girlfriends" will be a guy.
No, not a cross-dressing guy, but a guy with all the archetypes he could embody (Bi-Wildered, Camp/Straight Gay, etc.). Reception to this development will be...mixed.

As for what archetype he plays with...

  • The One Guy: Being the only other guy in Rentarou's Family bothers him because the bonds he forms with the harem are going to be markedly different than how the girls get along with each other. His presence deconstructs the assumption that another active guy in the plot automatically threatens previously-established relationships, or that the girls have some sort of moral failing for regularly hanging out with him as much as they would with Rentarou. He would most likely be seen as a rival muscling in on Rentarou's territory by outsiders no matter how much the harem clarifies.
  • One of the Girls: He gets along fine with the other girls and feels secure in himself, but outsiders assume he's only there to be the Gay Best Friend and treat him accordingly as an extension of them rather than his own person, pissing the Family off.
  • Incompatible Orientation: If the incompatible part is on Rentarou's, then their relationship explores how soulmates work from a platonic perspective and how they're just as valid as his more straightforwardly romantic members. Alternatively, the guy braces for this as a possibility and finds Rentarou is just as affectionate with him as everyone else.
  • But Not Too Gay/But Not Too Bi: As a series primarily about Rentarou's girlfriends, focus on this boy will by default be negligible compared to them. Whether this leads to the same friendly ribbing other Out of Focus characters get or leads to Gayngst where the guy deliberately stays out of the way to let his beloved's other beloveds shine will depend.
At least one of the "girlfriends" will be one of the girls who rejected Rentarou in the past.
As a deconstruction of Childhood Friend Romance.
  • I fully expect that. I also think we'll see some of the rejecting girls reacting to Rentarou and company in various ways: some supporting/well-wishing of them, some confused and bewildered, and at least one wanting to sabotage Rentarou out of jealous spite ("How dare that guy who wasn't good enough for me get together with so many girls?! I'll show HIM!").
  • Asakawa could potentially be this near the final stretch, considering some peculiar details in the first two pages:
    • Rentarou confessed to her in their middle school graduation, and his 100-soulmate journey involves him meeting them in high school. High school Asakawa might become a changed woman by then.
    • Her eyes are hidden, similar to Meme. One must wonder if Rentarou actually got a good look at her compared to how he met Meme. The Hidden Eyes trope involves a character being secretive, so Asakawa might actually have her own reasons for rejecting Rentarou at that time.
    • "Each pair of soulmates are destined to meet each other at their own designated time." Rentarou's window is "high school student", so maybe the time of "Asakawa the soulmate" hasn't come yet.

Girlfriends closely associated with the senses of smell and hearing will appear at some point.
With Momiji's inclusion, there are now three girlfriends to establish a theme of the five senses:
  • Kurumi is strongly associated with delicious food (thus, taste).
  • Mimimi is strongly associated with beauty (thus, sight).
  • And now Momiji is strongly associated with softness (thus, touch).
  • Hypotheses about smell:
    • An aromatherapist in training (e.g., Perfumer from Arknights)
    • Florist
  • Hypotheses about hearing:
    • Otolaryngologist (i.e., ear, nose, and throat doctor)
    • ASMR Video creator
    • Voice actor
    • Shizuka may have already achieved this. In Chapter 43, Mei brings up that Shizuka's "newfound rabbitness enhanced her hearing to an unexpected degree" and helped Mei avoid Hahari's tentacle hair.

There will be at least one Magical Girlfriend in the mix.
Combine with the above WMG about one of the girlfriends being non-human, though it also includes the possibility of a Magical Girl or other type of Cute Witch.

One of the girlfriends will think she's in a horror manga.
Since the manga exists within the manga itself, it's to be expected that at least one of the girlfriends will have read it before they meet Rentarou. Given the fact that soulmates would die if they couldn't be together, combined with how crazy the girls in Rentarou's harem are, it wouldn't be difficult to imagine that someone would see being in love with Rentarou as being a character in a horror manga.

Girlfriend #44 will be a Yandere.
In order to tie in with Four Is Death.

There will be a Henshin Hero girlfriend.
Just imagine a girl that lets the manga make as many Super Sentai, Kamen Rider and Power Rangers references as possible.

There will be a Mecha pilot girlfriend.
Similar to the above, just imagine a girl that straight-up has a giant mecha of sorts, letting us get as many Mazinger Z, Getter Robo and Gundam references imaginable. Or the entire kitchen sink go Super Robot Wars.

A future girlfriend will be straight-up evil.
I don’t mean in an Anti-Villain role like Hahari started out as; she pretty much did a Heel–Face Turn as soon as the zing happened. I mean someone with Big Bad levels of evil potential, who harms people without remorse for her own selfish reasons, and who doesn’t give up her Evil Plan even after the zing. From here, she would likely become conflicted as she loves Rentarou despite opposing him, whereas Rentarou, while nonetheless loving her, can sense that she is capable of better than this and will not tolerate her behavior because to do so would be wrong. There would likely be a confrontation at some point, with her serving as an Arc Villain, with all of Rentarou’s Family contributing to her defeat, through The Power of Love and The Power of Friendship, but even after she accepts joining the Family she’d be Reformed, but Not Tamed and serve as the Token Evil Teammate, though this now being limited to jokes much like Rin’s violence fetish.

Several of Rentarou's soulmates will be located outside of Japan
While yes, Tokyo Is the Center of the Universe is a thing, it's not unreasonable to think that some of his soulmates could be overseas. Rentarou could likely meet them via an overseas vacation the entire family takes thanks to the Hanazono's finances, and the new soulmates could transfer to Japan as Foreign Exchange Students. In fact, we may have actually gotten three cameos.

In Chapter 43, when Hahari is lifting her hair into orbit, we're shown three establishing shots of nations around the world, each with a girl with a distinctive design focused on. Based on the landmarks shown, these appear to be set in New York Harbor (Statue of Liberty), Rio de Janeiro (Christ the Redeemer), and Moscow (Kremlin). Considering how distinctive their designs are and the fact they're shown at all, it seems like possible hinting at us seeing them again. So if the family ever decides to visit the US, Brazil, or Russia, keep an eye out for one of those three.

One of the girlfriends will finally address what happens if the soulmate is currently in a relationship.
We already see glimpses of it in characters like Hahari and Yakusen, whom had long-deceased husbands/love interests in the past and consider Rentarou a Second Love. This girlfriend, on the other hand, will get the Zing while they're already with or crushing hard on another character, and their arc will center around how they reassess their feelings when it's called into question. To soften the blow (and make it clear that Rentarou's not seducing away the girl or making her cheat), the trope they explore will be the Romantic False Lead, showing what happens to the characters a typical romance protagonist would leave behind in pursuit of their true love.

    Other
Rentarou will die a virgin.
This may be a Poison Oak Epileptic Tree, but the explanation is as follows: If Rentarou chooses any one girl to be his soulmate, then the other 99 will all die of heartbreak, and since he wants to prevent this, he has decided to date them all at once and never favor any of them. Of course, he (and the audience) doesn't know whether "choosing one girl over the others" is any more specific than just saying that one of them is his official girlfriend and breaking up with the others, or whether doing anything intimate that takes their relationship to the next level is considered sufficient favoritism to give the others their deaths by misfortune. Since it is physically impossible for one man to have sex with multiple women at the same time, then even if he plans on treating the girlfriends all equally, he would necessarily have to sleep with one of them first, meaning the others would die before he ever has a chance to rectify it. Thus, to avoid taking that risk, Rentarou will likely remain in a truly chaste relationship with all the girlfriends for the rest of his life.

Kusuri's birthday is April 20.
First, this is right on the boundary between Aries and Taurus, meaning that the girls could be confused as to what her star sign is, explaining why Kusuri confirms that she is indeed an Aries in Chapter 29. Second, it means she was born on 4/20. That is too good to pass up!
  • Unfortunately Jossed by Chapter 133: her birthday is revealed to be April 18.

All the girlfriends will be different takes on different tropes.
Well, why not? After all, we already have two variants of Tsundere with Karane and Kurumi, as well as two variants of Shrinking Violet with Shizuka and Meme, so who's to say we won't get a variant on Narcissist, or Mad Scientist, or Determinator?

At least one of the Abusive Parents will make an appearance.
And they'll either redeem themselves or be punished big-time for their abuse.
  • Shizuka's mother has been visited by Rentarou, and she does redeem herself in the arc she appears in.

The later portion of the series will involve a World Tour
Because there are only so many archetypes you can squeeze into a high-school setting, the status quo will eventually shift to Rentaro and the girls traveling across the world (or even across dimensions) to meet more exotic girlfriends. They might graduate high school first, but it'll likely take place during summer vacation.

This may also come with a dose of Cerebus Syndrome to inject the plots with more action/adventure than pure comedy (a la Negima!), but just as likely it'll simply be stuffed with more gags of the National Stereotypes kind.

Being assigned any number of soulmates by the God of Love requires suffering an equal number of rejections first.
In Chapter 1, the God of Love admits that being assigned even one soulmate is exceptionally fortunate. This implies that each of Rentarou's girlfriends also went through a rejection before they fell in love with him.

The series will end with Rentarou becoming the (a?) new God of Love.
His girlfriends will consequently be given a choice: whether to join him on the Spirit Plane, and consequently sever all (or at least most) ties with the mortal world or to allow him to ascend alone and lose him forever.

If there is an anime adaptation, it will create at least some original girlfriends.
Bonus points if the last chapter (or arc) of the manga incorporates them, making the feat of depicting 100 individual girlfriends that much easier.
  • That's assuming the anime won't take the multi-season route that's been growing in popularity.
  • Multi-season route?
    • It's basically when an anime that's adapting a long-running manga does a certain about of episodes and then takes a break before resuming. Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia are good examples.

Rentaro will be voiced by the Harem King himself, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, in the anime adaptation.
If this becomes real it would be really awesome not gonna lie.
  • Jossed. Rentaro will be voiced by Wataru Katou.

Rentarou will meet eight False Soulmates before he reaches 100.
In order to tie in with Mystical 108. Nozawa-sensei and Kusuri's mother were the first two.
  • If this count applies in the general sense of the manga (as in, who the reader sees), maybe he already met two: Asakawa, and Anonymous Friend "A".

The God of Love was also distracted when assigning Momiji's soulmates.
Because really, Hakari's chest? There is no way the God intended that.

Uncle Hiro inadvertently saved all of Rentarou's family.
The man was so determined to get Rentarou together with his daughter that he hid Chiyo from Rentarou's sight and knowledge until they were both teens, purely so that the Westermarck Effect didn't stop them from pursuing a relationship later. But they are soulmates, so that wouldn't stop them at all. Once they make eye contact, the zing is certain. Assuming that the zing waits until they understand what love is before killing them from heartbreak if unreciprocated, then that means Rentarou gets one of his girlfriends long before high school, so he never feels the need to pray at the shrine for a relationship since he isn't rejected by 100 girls. As such, the God of Love never answers his prayer and never tells him that he actually has 100 soulmates, nor that he must get together with all of them lest the rejected girls die. So Rentarou never considers the possibility of polyamory nor the need for it, but once he inevitably meets whoever the next soulmate is (not necessarily Hakari and Karane, due to the butterfly effect) and feels the zing, he may well ignore it since he already has a girlfriend. Worse, when the other girls confess to him, he might turn them down because he doesn't yet think polygamy is an option. (He only went with it in canon because he knew of the consequences of having multiple soulmates ahead of time and thought dating them all in secret was too cruel, remember.) Also, Chiyo's personality makes her probably not the best choice to be the first girlfriend, especially since her character development wouldn't have happened yet in the absence of a preexisting True Companions. Thus, the harem doesn't happen and the other 99 girls die.

If the God of Love had not been distracted, Rentarou's only soulmate would have been...
  • Mai. We know that Rentarou was originally supposed to have just one soulmate but that the God of Love added two zeroes to the number by accident, which raises the question of which girl was supposed to be his soulmate even before that incident. Out of all of them introduced so far, Mai is the only one who expresses dislike and even hatred toward Rentarou, and she has no idea why she has feelings for him despite this. (Karane is such a Bad Liar that her "it's not 'cause I like you or anything" deal doesn't count, since she doesn't really believe it and everyone can tell what she really thinks.) The other girls, by contrast, are only ever positive towards him, almost like they got smilies painted on their souls, at least regarding their love lives, since they were never intended to be his soulmates in the first place. Surely it's significant that Rentarou is only having difficulty making it work with Mai and no one else? Relationships are supposed to be lifelong for a reason!
    • Not sure where this Getting Smilies Painted on Your Soul thing is coming from, especially when the God Of Love said that soulmates are decided from birth. It's not that they weren't intended to be his soulmates, its just that the God Of Love screwed up when filling out Rentaro's form, meaning 100 people who hadn't yet been assigned soulmates ended up matching with Rentaro. And it's not like Mai is the only one with negative feelings or difficulty towards Rentaro. Nano thought feelings of love weren't productive initially, so she tried to end the relationship before it even began, and Hahari still had negative feelings towards Rentaro initially even after locking eyes with him due to her love for Hakari outweighing her newfound love for him. Each of the girls are unique after all, and Mai being the one upfront about disliking Rentaro initially is just part of what makes her unique amidst the girls, not any sign that she was the "intended" soulmate, because there likely wasn't an intended soulmate until the form was filled out.
  • Hakari or Hahari. Both are the frontmost girls in the harem and have multiple chapters devoted to their development. Their family supplied a good chunk of Rentarou's harem (both Hanazono women, the Meidos) and are actively bankrolling him. It would make a lot of sense if one of them was the real soulmate.
  • Yaku. It's implied a few times that Rentarou may be the reincarnation of her husband, after all.
  • Chiyo. Her father did everything in his power to ensure that the two of them would be paired together at the right time after Rentarou saved him from getting hit by a truck.
  • Tama. If he hadn’t found her, she literally would have succumbed to despair and died.

One couple in the series will be used to deconstruct the Soulmate concept itself.
Just as Rentarou and the girls are putting in the effort to stay together, there will probably be a couple that embodies the opposite: a pair that knows they're soulmates but has complete faith that they'll work everything out because they wouldn't be made for each other if they don't, like a self-imposed Marriage Before Romance.

If the upcoming anime gets an English dub…
Who would be the voice actors?
  • Rentarou's dub VA would probably be the Harem King themself, Jessie James Grelle.
    • On second thought, after learning that Grelle is transgender (using they/she pronouns), Bryson Baugus might be Rentarou's dub VA.
    • Neither. It's Travis Mullenix.

Eira has pantophobia.
Her father taught her capoeira in an attempt to conquer her fear, but it only worked on those things that can be defeated by kicking.

There is such a thing as the opposite of a soulmate.
That is, two people who realize they hate each other when they first lock eyes. When Rentarou first meets Shizuka’s mother, they are not soulmates and there is no zing, but the meeting is framed in the same overly dramatic fashion as if they were. Of course, the meeting is really intense since he is here to confront her over her abuse towards her daughter.
  • Alternatively, the opposite of a soulmate is considered an Arch-Enemy: a pair that's just as intertwined, but operates on their eternal feud rather than their love. Rarely, a soulmate can be the same person as an arch-enemy, but the resulting relationship varies wildly in success.

An upcoming story will be about the gang trying to find the latest soulmate.
It could be a one-and-done or an entire multi-chapter Story Arc, but basically: imagine a super version of Rentaro's Zing with Kusuri, where the eye contact happens in a split-second before he, the soulmate, or both are swept off by circumstances (crowds pushing in opposite directions, train doors closing, natural disaster, etc.). Cue the Family trying to piece together this latest girl's identity based on nothing but a tiny handful of details gathered from a split-second glance.
  • One possible scenario: A Yandere who kidnaps half of Rentarou's girlfriends and then challenges him to a game of Human Chess or Human Shōgi, with Rentarou and the newest girlfriend as opposing kings.

The nature of soulmates literally repels anyone who isn't a soulmate
Asakawa from the first chapter talks about some of Rentarou's charm points and even admits that she likes that about him... but the thought of dating him makes her want to vomit. That's a pretty strong way to reject someone that she seems to like as a person. But it might make sense if a False Soulmate simply isn't allowed. Not to mention that, as someone who's meant to have 100 soulmates, Rentarou definitely can't waste time with a False Soulmate since he's about to start meeting his. In fact, maybe Rentarou is a special case.

There will be an emotionally understanding/therapist girlfriend
Cause good lord do a lot of the girls need someone to unpack to.

The Yakusens have divine ancestry.
Very far back of course, so much that they have long forgotten their nonhuman heritage, but since we know at least one god exists, there are certainly others. The Yakusens certainly seem like they could descend from the Shinto goddess of medicine, thus how their impossible drugs can work.

At least one girlfriend will die at some point later in the plot.
This will serve as a Wham Episode and kick off an arc in which Rentarou and the others get her back from the afterlife. Given the nature of the series, he'll meet at least one further girlfriend in the afterlife as well.

The Newbie Idol is a relative of Usami.
I bet the Idol will be a different take on "loneliness", pursuing her idol career to fulfill a similar weakness that Usami addressed by becoming part of the Rentarou Family.
