JJ driving the van sets up a major story arc.
Being able to drive is both a rite of passage for a teenager and a massive improvement in quality of life for someone with mobility problems; both getting into Driver's Ed and either modifying the van so he can get to the front in his powerchair (or more likely since theirs is '90s vintage, starting over with another one) present obstacles for Maya to apply her trademark style to. The show will have a crossover with The Good Doctor, another ABC show
Think about it. Ray looks a lot like Freddie Highmore did when he was younger. Freddy plays the main character in the Good Doctor. It's possible Sean Murphy is Jimmy's 2nd or 3rd cousin and that's why Ray and Sean look similar. In the crossover, JJ Dimeo gets hurt while the family is on vacation in San Jose and be taken to the hospital. This will lead to Sean meeting Ray and realizing how close the two look alike. Using the hospital resources, Sean tests his DNA and realizes he's related to the Dimeos. This gives him someone to talk to improve his social skills as Murphy has autism and needs help socializing with others. Likely future episode that occurs.
