"Aaallllllright, now I've got everything necessary for my horrible, cliche, cringy, stereotypical, ironic, run-of-the-mill, painfully average self insert FNF mod! Just like the fans wanted, for some reason."

Your Painfully Average Self Insert FNF Mod (aka ''Vs. TheMaskedChris) is a Friday Night Funkin' Game Mod made by TheMaskedChris. As the title suggests, the mod pits Boyfriend against Chris himself in a self-insert mod with the bonus of drenching itself in layers upon layers of Self-Deprecation and Take That! that makes literally every fnf mod ever look like a serious attempt.

The mod can be downloaded on GameBanana here.

Song List

Main Week

  1. Just Me
  2. Funnies
  3. Fulmination

Freeplay Songs

  1. Funk Trio
  2. Genocide

  • Bait-and-Switch: When "Fulmination" begins, Chris' side has the scroll speed amped up far beyond what most would find acceptable. Thankfully, Boyfriend's side has a much lower scroll speed in comparison, though that doesn't stop the song from being Nintendo Hard.
  • Camera Perspective Switch: Halfway through "Fulmination", Chris uses his powers to flip the screen to a first-person perspective.
  • Easy-Mode Mockery: There is an option in the settings to turn off the Interface Screw. But the description of the setting calls you a pussy.
  • Everyone Has Standards: In a somewhat meta example, despite applying Self-Deprecation to every aspect of the mod, Chris can't bring himself to mock the charting (which was done by Cerbera) or draw bad sprites for himself.
  • Expressive Mask: The zipper on Chris' face mask functions as a mouth, and the design on it changes with every pose.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Meta example; Chris in-universe is trying to make the songs as average and boring as he can, but with 3 talented composers working on the soundtrack, this obviously fails. Lampshaded in the cutscene before "Funnies", when Chris uses the "unfunny meme song" to make up for the quality of "Just Me".
  • Interface Screw: Gameplay-wise, this is the mod's primary feature. Every song except for "Funk Trio" has Chris mess around with the UI constantly, rotating it around and swapping the placements of the player's notes.
  • Power Limiter: Chris takes off his face mask in "Fulmination", causing light to burst from his mouth and transforming him into the obligatory Turns Red phase 3.
  • Product Placement:
    • Chris takes the time to plug his YouTube channel in the cutscene before "Funnies", but doesn't manage to get all the way through before the song starts.
    • According to the release trailer and showcase video, the mod itself is "sponsored" by Chris' recently-released CJ plushie. There's even a button for it added to the main menu.
  • Promoted to Playable: Chris becomes playable in "Funk Trio".
  • Self-Deprecation: The mod literally calls itself "painfully average", and the main plot revolves around Chris deliberately trying to make his mod as low-effort and run-of-the-mill as possible. Being the man behind Starlight Mayhem and Vs. Eteled, of course, he has to literally go down a list of necessary traits to do this. As a bonus, he also calls himself the physical embodiment of bad voice acting.
  • Shout-Out: Several other FNF mods are namedropped when Chris discusses what his mod needs to have.
    • Chris briefly puts on a Ron mask in the cutscene before "Funnies", but Boyfriend tells him to take it off, as animating it would add effort and commit copyright infringement on Vs. Bob.
      • "Funnies" itself is also very similar in concept to "Little Man", "Jump Out", and "Ronald McDonald Slide", being a song that incorporates numerous memes at a rapid-fire pace (though "Funnies" also takes the time to make them match with the song's tempo).
    • Also in the cutscene before "Funnies", Boyfriend starts to sing a verse of Dream's "Mask". Chris responds by shooting Boyfriend, telling him not to attract Dream stans.
    • When describing the mandatory Turns Red phase 3, Chris directly calls the trend a "Ballistic" ripoff.
    • "Genocide" is a song ripped straight from V.S. TABI Ex Boyfriend, something Chris is 100% ready to lampshade.
  • Signature Headgear: Chris' persona is never seen without his face mask, which this mod reveals can change expressions and is a Power Limiter.
  • Stylistic Suck: In-universe, Chris deliberately wants his mod to be as painfully mediocre as possible to mimic other self-insert FNF mods. In a meta sense...well, at least the background is a solid black plane.
  • Take That!: The entire point of the mod is to mercilessly mock the stereotypical low-effort self-insert FNF mod. The list Chris goes down in the cutscene before "Just Me" includes having a lazy background, average songs, bad charting, bad sprites, bad voice acting, an unfunny meme song, a Turns Red phase 3, and a bonus song that's just a cover of another popular FNF song.
  • Turns Red: Lampshaded and mocked in the cutscene before "Fulmination" when Chris realizes he needs an angry third phase to fulfill the average self-insert mod and takes off his signature mask, transforming into an all-black version of himself with claws and a glowing yellow mouth.
