"You should know it's dangerous to wander in the dark..."

V.S Zardy is a Friday Night Funkin' Game Mod created by SwankyBox. It features Zardy from Zardy's Maze as the opponent. It is characterized by the extreme difficulty comparable to Guitar Hero's "Through the Fire and Flames". It can be found on Gamebanana.

Zardy is a living scarecrow that wanders his corn maze, sneakily able to turn invisible whenever he pleases and slaughtering any trespassers. While traveling through a corn maze late at night, Boyfriend and Girlfriend seem to have the most unlucky day to meet this scarecrow in person... although he's not here to scare them in the traditional way!

Song List:

  1. Foolhardy (Zardy)
  2. Bushwhack (Zardy & Cable Crow)

This game provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed. Zardy in the original game is a murderous scarecrow that will kill you on sight, no questions asked. Here, as Boyfriend's music is disturbing his friends, Zardy challenges him on his own game to teach him a lesson instead of slitting his throat...but he can and WILL jumpscare you.
Zardy: "Darn brats trespassing with their damn noise cannons... You should know it's dangerous to wander in the dark... But if you want a show... I'll give you a show!"
Zardy: "Oh... Silly boy! It's you again! You shouldn't have come here... I warned you before that it's dangerous to wander in the dark. And yet you walked straight towards the center of the darkness. A foolhardy move, boy. But bravery has a funny way of betraying people... There's a big difference between you and I. The dark makes your world small. It devours your senses and puts you on edge. But to us? Well... Let's just say you couldn't have walked into a worse situation. Your story ends here."
  • Bait-and-Switch Boss: Zardy disappears about nearly halfway into "Bushwhack", allowing Cable Crow to take the reins.
  • Buffy Speak: Being an inhabitant of a farm, Zardy does not know what speakers are, calling them "noise cannons" instead.
  • Damsel in Distress: Girlfriend is being held up by a vine throughout the entirety of "Bushwhack".
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Zardy has a low baritone whenever he sings. It evolves into thrash metal-alike singing for the final minute of "Foolhardy" when his notes become more frenzied. Cable Crow himself also has a deep voice, but with more of a robotic twang.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: With the mechanics of Zardy's Maze in particular. In the game that the titular character originates from, you have to point your flashlight at him to make Zardy disappear before he catches you. Here, you're rapping against him until he eventually disappears completely, saving yourself from whatever he could do to you by catching you.
    • "Bushwhack" features vines that will stop Boyfriend from playing any notes until he gets out of them via inputting the pattern given.
  • Interface Screw: When Zardy begins to disappear, the game's HUD will begin to slowly swing left and right.
  • Jump Scare: Lose during one of the songs, and Zardy or Cable Crow will jumpscare you.
  • Invisibility: Zardy turns more and more transparent near the end of "Foolhardy", until he's invisible.
  • Lost in the Maize: The mod's backstory has Boyfriend and Girlfriend trespass into Zardy's corn maze so they can listen to music in peace, only to end up getting lost. The scarecrows inhabiting the maze get sick of the noise, so Zardy confronts the two with a song of his own, the titular "Foolhardy".
  • The Many Deaths of You: Your opponent jumpscares you on death. The resulting game over screen has Boyfriend's brain and blueballs pulsing faster than the beat of the music as if his heart is racing in terror.
  • Marathon Level: Zardy's specialty. "Foolhardy", the first - and until August 2021, the only - song this mod has to provide, is four minutes long. For the record, the longest song in the vanilla game at the time of the mod's release was "MILF", which is only half as long.
    • And "Bushwhack" takes it further, with it being 6 minutes in length.
  • Metal Scream: Zardy lets out a deep scream once he starts the last few verses of "Foolhardy", and every so often during the first half of Bushwhack.
  • Microphone Swinging: Zardy swings the microphone attached to his hoe upwards in his up and left arrow animations. Cable Crow gets a similar effect by launching the grappling hook the microphone is in for part of his right arrow animation, and he'll also chuck Zardy's microphone at you for a One-Hit KO if you can't escape from the vine by the time he arrives.
  • Nintendo Hard: There are 1000 notes in "Foolhardy", with them getting dropped really quickly later on, and most of the song is harmonized. The intention was to make it the hardest mod for Friday Night Funkin' at the time of release, which it certainly delivers.
    • "Bushwhack" takes it up to 11, with the note count being increased to 1663, the song itself being 6 minutes long, and with new mechanics to keep you on edge.
  • One-Hit Kill: During the transition between Zardy vanishing and Cable Crow taking the field, vines grab Boyfriend. If he doesn’t escape before Cable Crow arrives, the latter throws Zardy’s hoe at Boyfriend for an instant Jump Scare.
  • Retraux: Zardy's vocals are intentionally put through a lower-quality filter to emulate the Nintendo 64-era graphics his original game was meant to evoke.
  • Scary Scarecrows: Zardy is a scarecrow and an evil-looking one just like in the original, and by the time of "Bushwhack", he's fully intent on causing harm to him.
  • Turns Red: In the last 42 seconds of "Foolhardy", Zardy begins to disappear and throws a massive barrage of notes at Boyfriend, adding the above Interface Screw on top.
