"So many souls to play with, in so little time! Wouldn't you agree?"

"Your time has come and gone. You played the game, and you've lost. It's time for a new game. Your pieces have already been set. (laughing) Check! Your move. [...] The fires await!"
—Sonic.exe, RERUN trailer

Vs. Sonic.exe RERUN is a recursive mod of Vs Sonic.exe for Friday Night Funkin', directed by NayuKhrome and muto157. The mod itself serves to be a proper recreation of the original mod, in a bid to address everything that went wrong with the original mod and building on it to make a better experience.

On 17th Oct 2022, a streamer build was put out containing one of the songs for the mod, "Third Party", while during June 2023, a leaked build containing 14 of the songs for the future was released, though several of these are incomplete or to be expanded upon. This was patched up and finished off by the team on the 23rd June 2023, and the build with the content can be downloaded and played here.

Updates for the mod as it continues development can be found on the Twitter accounts of both NayuKhrome and muto157.

Song List

Current songs

Songs not yet complete/implemented

  • Stranger Danger (Stranger vs. Skid and Pump)
  • Smoke & Mirrors (Sonic.exe vs. Girlfriend)
  • Ashes to Ashes (Sonic.exe vs. Pico)
  • Chimera This song is to be themed around the "SONIC" creepypasta by Chinelin, specifically its original version.

This mod contains the following examples:

  • Adaptational Context Change: "Mania", planned for the original mod, didn't have complete context behind it, mainly consisting of Secret History Tails itching to kill Boyfriend for getting a little too close to Sonic. Here, though, "Twisted" is a full-blown recreation of the finale of "Secret History of Sonic and Tails", right down to Sonic showing up to give his ex-sidekick what for.
  • Adaptational Location Change: In terms of the opponents who have returned from Vs Sonic.exe...
    • "Endless" took place in a dense forest, while "Enterprise" takes place in what seems to be a deep cave system.
    • While "Cycles" took place in a corrupted version of Green Hill Zone in Lord X's image, "Torment" takes place in the Death Egg.
    • "Milk" took place within the disco room from the very end of Sunky.MPEG, while "Party Streamers" takes place in the "The Hills Are Alive" level from much earlier in the game.
    • "Sunshine" took place in a dark void with a checkered floor and limited lighting. While this is still in play for "Redolled", there are several points that actually take place around Resort Island Zone instead.
  • Adaptational Modesty: In her new design, Girlfriend now wears a sweater and jeans alongside a pair of glasses.
  • Art Shift:
    • "Party Streamers", "Top Loader", "Time Attack", "Redolled", "Last Chance" and "Twisted" are all fully in the art style of each of their original source material.
  • Aspect Ratio Switch: "Top Loader", "Time Attack" and "Redolled" take place in a smaller window, akin to the NES and SEGA Genesis/Saturn resolution.
  • Call-Back: This mod is full of these, due to calling back to other past Sonic creepy things.
    • "Time Attack" is a wholesale reference to An Ordinary Sonic ROM Hack, and if you never hit any monitor notes, you couldn't be blamed for believing that this is simply a Lighter and Softer song compared to all the others. However, once you do, and you take ahold of Sonic.exe as the playable character, you'll be proven wrong fast.
    • For the homestretch of "Last Chance", Zalgo possesses Sonic, just like in iNSanITy.exe's bad ending. The whole song itself is a callback to the Sonic2.exe trilogy made by NovaWare
  • Demonic Possession: Sonic falls afoul of this from Zalgo during "Last Chance", just as the real Tails arrives.
  • Digital Piracy Is Evil: Piracy Sonic's whole motive of antagonising Boyfriend, simply for pirating a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog. He even treats the crime very seriously, if the use of the word "FELONY" popping up in the background from time-to-time is any indication.
"PIRACY IS A CRIME." "PLEASE RETURN THIS CARTRIDGE IMMEDIATELY."
  • Double-Meaning Title: "Party Streamers" alludes to two things; real-life streamers used as party decorations, alongside YouTube streamers playing Sunky.MPEG, Markiplier included.
  • Interface Screw: At several points in "Party Streamers", Sunky scrambles the arrows on your side of the screen, and you need to use the mouse to manually put them back into their normal positions. Thankfully, a non-intrusive Justified Tutorial gives you a heads-up about this before the first occurrence.
  • Lighter and Softer: Compared to the other horrors faced in the mod, "Party Streamers" and "REROY" are much more sillier and light-hearted. "Time Attack" could be considered as such as well, as long as you never hit the world-changing monitors in the chart, at least.
  • Mid-Battle Tea Break: Midway through "Party Streamers", when Markiplier takes his turn, Sunky.MPEG is just seen seemingly texting on a smartphone before he returns to the song proper.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • At one point in "Third Party", Piracy Sonic's older sprites are shown alongside the final version in one turn.
    • Once Zalgo has possessed Sonic in "Last Chance", his first lyrics match up to parts of the original games.
      • "A new dawn hits the ground" references "NEW DAWN Act 1", the first level of SUNSHINE.exe.
      • "Strike a deal" connects to Zalgo making his deal with Robotnik that had quickly Gone Horribly Wrong.
      • "But you'll regret it soon" is a reminder of Zalgo betraying Robotnik to inflict his own twisted ideals upon the world, which the doctor was quick to regret later.
      • "Now's your last chance!" not only connects to the name of the song itself, but is also linked to the very first level of the saga.
    • The second One-Winged Angel form for Zalgo in "Last Chance" is actually designed after his most common interpretation.
  • One-Winged Angel:
    • Sonic.exe will most likely get one of his own like in the original mod for RERUN's version of "Triple Trouble".
    • Zalgo actually has TWO of these, one for each vessel he uses.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Throughout all of "Third Party", Boyfriend does not have his smug act going on and looks panicked in his animations, likely realising that Piracy Sonic clearly outmatches him in many ways.
  • Original Generation: As of the leaked Nayu build, Hyper-Accurate is the only completely original character to appear in the mod thus far. While Sonic.NES and Eggman.NES can count as well, the creepypasta is based on the Somari NES bootleg game, while Reroy is a version of Tails Doll wearing headphones.
  • Our Angels Are Different: Hyper-Accurate's appearance is pretty akin to an angel, with "Sinful Prayer" even taking place in a Heaven-like environment, but unfortunately, he's anything BUT holy.
  • Perspective Flip:
    • Serving as a gameplay mechanic in "Time Attack", hitting monitors in the chart changes the world between the actual Green Hill Zone and Sonic.exe's twisted version of it. Players will preferably want to keep on Sonic's side, considering that playing as Sonic.exe will actually drain your HP, no matter what.
    • Midway into "Last Chance", the perspective flips to a black void where the player faces Zalgo in full view, drastically more detailed and unhinged than before. It goes back to normal once Sonic is possessed.
    • Once Sonic shows up in the homestretch of "Twisted", the perspective flips to have Secret History Tails at the front, with Sonic, Amy and Boyfriend all in full focus.
  • Serial Killer: Sonic.NES (or rather, the man in the vessel, John Walter) is one, having claimed the lives of three to five children before he "reached eternal salvation".
  • Suddenly Speaking: Zalgo plays this to his advantage throughout "Last Chance", even full-out singing at points after he has possessed Sonic.

"Bye, guys!" (cue explosion)
