The story of man and monster, retold.
"The game you've come to love, now with bits and pieces of new content!"
— Underevent 2021 trailer

Created by Team!BNP, Undertale: Bits and Pieces was a Game Mod of Undertale featuring completely overhauled graphics — leaning more towards a 16-bit aesthetic, compared to the original's more 8-bit-esque design — new areas, new characters, new enemies and remixed music, as well as backporting content from its successor Deltarune.

At the time of the mod's last update, most content up through Hotland had been completed. The mod, now archived, may be downloaded from GameJolt here.

On November 11th, 2023, development was put indefinitely on hold after the director of the project was arrested for child pornography possession. Two days later on the 13th, it was announced development of the mod would no longer continue, with the mod being archived. What was finished of the mod's next big update, the "Suzy Update", was released as a secondary, unstable build.

Following this announcement, the team would move onto a new Undertale mod project, Undertale: Project Harmony.

Undertale:Bits and Pieces provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • While it made the original game prettier, it also added new characters and new places (a sewer system and a little city in the Ruins, the mirror room and the spa in Waterfall, a minigame, a residential area and a future side area in Hotland).
    • While the game's resolution remains 4:3, the mod added the consoles' borders if you play on fullscreen, and some places even used colored variations: Ruins' purple border becomes gray if you go in the sewers while Hotland's red border become blue when you get to the CORE, and the Hotterland section will have a gray-blue variation of it.
    • This mod also added the consoles exclusive secret room accessible through Papyrus' sink: while the third big iteration of the mod contempted itself of the Mad Mew Mew battle (and the "Anime Is Real" border), the fourth added the dognations (Mad Mew Mew is only accessible after having visited New Home), and the game files include the casino music, however, this never came to fruition due to the mod's cancellation.
  • Anti-Frustration Features: Multiple quality of life improvements had been made, easing many common complaints people have had with Undertale's gameplay:
    • Pressing ESC will bring up a pause menu, allowing you to quickly change the settings, or quickly return to the save screen.
    • When Toriel gives you a Cell Phone, she also gives you a pair of sneakers, allowing you to run by holding X.
    • Fulfilling a condition for the Genocide route will cause a jingle will play. Likewise, a different jingle will play when fulfilling a condition to abort it.
    • A Froggit in the Ruins will tell the player "how much fun they are having". This number actually corresponds to the FUN value, serving as an easy way to find out what that particular run's FUN value is, since it's normally hidden in the game's files.
    • Undyne's pursuit will work in a similar way to Deltarune: Frisk's soul and eyes will glow red, and instead of being transported into a battlefield, they only have to avoid her spears on the map. The same works for Hotland's blue and orange lines puzzles.
    • The Art Club now has one reunion the 10th of each month, giving you another day to meet So Sorry if you missed the October 8th reunion.
    • After a reset, Frisk can find the Wrist Protector from Deltarune hidden inside the first room. It, of course, allows you to quickly skip through dialogue.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Monster Kid now accompanies you throughout the majority of Waterfall, rather than simply showing up in a few specific areas.
    • Jerry appears more frequently alongside Ice Cap in Snowdin, and even in places you wouldn't expect like the Ruins and the CORE.
    • Suzy, who is only mentioned briefly when Clam Girl appears, will be getting a section where she follows you around. Due to the mod's cancellation, this was left largely unstable.
  • Blood-Splattered Warrior: A variation: if you take a No Mercy run, Frisk's clothing will be covered in dust.
  • Bootstrapped Leitmotif:
    • The unused track "Star" - which was intended for Madjick in vanilla - has instead become repurposed as a shared motif for Frisk and Chara in this mod: an arrangement of the track - "Room of Fallen Stars" - plays in the first room when Frisk wakes up in the Underground, the new Genocide battle theme - "Enemy Poaching" - incorporates a Dark Reprise of the melody, and the boss theme for the monster who mirrors Frisk in Waterfall - "One Step Ahead of Yourself" - follows the same vein by making it sound even more menacing.
    • The main melody of "Battle Against A True Hero" and "Power of NEO" - which originally is a variation of the Waterfall variation of the Ruins theme - is also now used to represent the Genocide Route as a whole, appearing in most of the Genocide-exclusive songs (including the aforementioned "Enemy Poaching").
    • Toby Fox's fanmade theme song for Noisemaster - which already had part of the theme reused for "Metal Crusher" (Mettaton's first battle theme in Undertale) is repurposed as a battle theme for the Troubleboys with some additions, including replacing the aforementioned part with a new motif.
    • Mirror Frisk's battle theme, "One Step Ahead of Yourself", features the melody of "Megalo Strike Back" - a song Toby made for an EarthBound (1994) fan album that became heavily associated with Undertale through its use in fan works.
  • The Cameo: Martlet shows up in Snowdin ready for work depending on the player's SAVE file's Fun number.
  • Colorization: The battle sprites of the monsters now are fully colored, as well as certain enemy attacks.
  • Copy Protection: If you try to play the mod with a pirated version of the game, Flowey will come and ask you to buy the original game, even redirecting you to the Steam page. After that, the screen will be locked in a gif of the Annoying Dog sleeping much like a player's failed room hack in the original game.
  • Creepy Jazz Music: The Mirror Monster's battle theme, "One Step Ahead of Yourself".
  • Cut Short: Due to recent events that happened to the creator of the mod, the developers have decided to release all of the work that they made on the Suzy update in its buggy state. And have made clear that they are not continuing it, and that any attempts on trying to do it themselves should not be tried.
  • Developer's Foresight: If you reset the game, Frisk's soul won't glow at the same spots. For example, they're on their guard when Sans follows them in the forest, but if you reset, they won't care anymore. On the other hand, while the child was clueless about Flowey, they will expect the worst after a reset if they haven't already killed him before then.
  • Disconnected Side Area:
    • In the Ruins, the area where you can get the Toy Knife in the base game now splits off into two brand new areas: the Sewers, which is pretty self-explanatory, and HOME, a town-like area similar to the one in Snowdin. The latter is locked by a gate, requiring a key you can find in the former.
    • Snowdin has a campfire area blocked off by two Chilldrakes. You can fight them if you wear the Manly Bandana.
  • Easter Egg:
    • Shadow Man, a character created by BNP mod creator Blaize, can be found via a hidden pathway in Snowdin Forest. He's quite pleasant, offering tea and a nice chat and a cryptic remark about Frisk's eyes not having adjusted yet. There are other spots inaccessible outside of debug mode where he can be found nonetheless, and he has special dialogue for that that's just as cordial.
    • One of the many Debug-only rooms features the infamous meme character Prunsel.Explanation
    • Similarly, depending on the Fun value, Martlet, a main NPC from Undertale Yellow will show up in Snowdin forest, ready for work at the sentry station.
  • Fan Remake: While Bits and Pieces is actually a mod of the original Undertale, it's essentially, for all intents and purposes, a ground-up reimagining of the game — keeping the same story and gameplay of the original, while also updating the graphics and (optionally) music, expanding upon the story with new areas and dialogue, restoring unused and console-exclusive content, and making various general quality-of-life improvements.
  • Game-Breaking Bug: Glyde's battle has a glitch that prevents you from moving after a victory.
  • Game-Over Man: Every time Frisk dies, Flowey will be shown in the background and Asriel may speak in the game over screen instead of Asgore.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Just like in the base game, monsters' names will turn yellow once they no longer want to fight. This comes into play during Asgore's battle—since he really doesn't want to kill you, his name is already yellow from the start. Unfortunately, since he destroyed the Mercy button, you still can't spare him.
  • Healing Spring: In Waterfall, there is a new area called the Hotwater Bathhouse, where you can use hot springs to restore health ala Mother 3.
  • Hidden Eyes: Frisk's eyes will be hidden by their bangs' shadow if you take a No Mercy run.
  • Jump Scare: Occasionally a face will brust out of the walls in the True Lab's long corridor. It's a remnant of an idea Toby Fox had for the original game though as a placeholder, Photoshop Flowey's face is used.
  • Mirror Monster: The unknown enemy who mirrors a faceless Frisk will gain autonomy as soon as you interact with them and will jump out of the mirror as soon as your character turns around and tries to leave.
  • The Mirror Shows Your True Self:
    • On a Genocide run, Frisk's reflection will bear more of a resemblance to the Fallen Human, up to and including a smile.
    • If the FUN value is set to a certain number, the normally quirky Monster Kid's puddle reflection will instead be that of the Goner Kid.
  • Mythology Gag: When first encountering Sans in Snowdin, he quotes a line from “Way Deeper Down” by The Stupendium.
Sans: i’m the serif of these parts. nah, i’m just kiddin’. i work on a grease cart.
  • Optional Boss:
    • The Troubleboys, Hitch and Portabie, are a boss duo that appear in the Sewers. However, they are required to be beaten if you want to explore all the mod has to offer, since they hold the key to HOME.
    • The unknown entity who mirrors Frisk only appears in a secret room in Waterfall. Depending on if they were spared or killed, defeating them will grant Frisk one of 2 abilities: SHIELD and RAGE.
  • Player Death Is Dramatic:
    • If Frisk loses all their HP, alongside the heartbreaking death animation, they will be shown having a heart attack and falling on the ground.
    • And if they are killed by Asgore, their SOUL will be trapped into a container before it shatters.
    • In the final fight with Asriel, they'll stop themself falling face down, bracing on all fours as the SOUL refuses.
  • Remake Cameo: A few from Deltarune:
    • Berdly appears in HOME as a child. He, alongside Noelle, were also planned to be key stars in the upcoming "Suzy Side Story" update. This never came to fruition.
    • With a certain FUN value, Rouxls Kaard will appear in certain sections of the CORE for no explicable reason.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Silliness Switch: FUN value 69 causes all sorts of silly meme references to pop up, such as Sans introducing himself as "Sans Undertale" and the first scene with Papyrus being very truncated. Even Sans is left very disappointed!
  • Spider-Sense: Everytime Frisk senses danger, their soul and eyes will glow red and the screen around them will get darker Deltarune-style.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Papyrus now has a laughing voice clip that plays right before you fight him.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: In a No Mercy run, monsters escape from the ruthless killer you made Frisk become, including the Ice Wolf. While it didn't have consequences in the original game, this mod shows that without the ice cubes to cool down the CORE, the structure is having a meltdown.
  • Unintentionally Unwinnable: For now, the Glyde battle has a bug that leaves Frisk unable to move if you win.
  • Voice Grunting: Some characters like Mad Dummy and Muffet gain ones but no dialogue portrait, while it's the other way around for Napstablook and Monster Kid.
