Video Game / Nanoman

Go To

Nanoman is a Video Game Demake of the classic Mega Man games made on Pico-8 by FunFetched, with music by Gruber Music. It attempts to emulate the basic features of the original games (with some differences due to the Pico-8's limitations), with 5 Robot Masters to fight and a final level.

It can be played for free on the Pico-8 BBS here: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=29017

  • Anti-Climax Boss: The final confrontation with Dr. Pico has the boss theme play as his lifebar fills up and he taunts Nanoman, revealing himself to be his creator. Nanoman simply shoots him with a single shot from whatever weapon he currently has equipped, killing Pico instantly.
  • Anti-Frustration Features: After each boss rush room in the final level, you are given a large weapon gauge refill and a large health pickup as soon as you leave it.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Laserman's ability, "Laser", fires piercing laserbeams.
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space: The final level takes place in space, and yet Dr. Pico, a human, can breathe just fine.
  • Boss Rush: Wouldn't be a Mega Man game without one. However, due to the limitations, the Robot Masters are rematched in a predetermined order.
  • Cool Helmet: Armorman has one, which completely obscures his face.
  • Composite Character: Dr. Pico is the game's final opponent, obviously aping Dr. Wily; but the fact he created Nanoman also makes him partially based on Dr. Light.
  • Cyber Cyclops: Laserman and Seekman are these. In their case, it also doubles as Red Eyes, Take Warning.
  • Expy: Most of the characters and enemies are these of ones from the Mega Man games.
    • Nanoman himself is obviously one of Mega Man.
    • Dr. Pico, again, obviously, is one of Dr. Wily, with an element of Dr. Light.
    • Dashman's design and ability are a clear nod to Quick Man.
    • The green leaping enemies take a page from Metalls, being invincible when still and only able to be hurt when the player approaches.
    • Blue spinners that leap out of pits and fire arcing projectiles are pretty much Bombombombs.
    • The blue spiky enemies that move side-to-side take their attack patterns from Suzies.
  • Feathered Fiend: The yellow bird enemies, which fly in a waving pattern from offscreen.
  • Homing Projectile: Seekman's ability, "Seek", involves firing heat-seeking missiles.
  • Hyperspace Mallet: Hammerman's power, "Hammer", makes him swing a large mallet in front of him, seemingly coming out of thin air.
  • Instant Armor: Armorman's power, "Armor", doesn't change Nanoman's weapon; rather, it gives him this, which lets him tank damage as long as the weapon gauge is full.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: In the final faceoff against Dr. Pico, he says "FOOL! YOU CAN'T STOP ME - I CREATED YOU!"
  • Nintendo Hard: And how! Even compared to some official entries, the game is tough, mainly due to obstacle and enemy placement and enemy behaviour. On top of that, getting killed brings you back to the start of the current stage, and the weapon gauges don't refill when you exit a level.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Nanoman is stylized "Nano Man" on the title screen, but in all other cases omits the space.
  • Spikes of Doom: Again, as standard for Mega Man games.
  • Super-Speed: Dashman's shtick, complete with Speed Stripes. Used as a Speed Blitz in his bossfight, and upon getting his ability, "Dash", Nanoman can do the same.
  • Underground Monkey: Nanoman and all of the Robot Masters share a body, only with different palettes and heads. Justified due to the Pico-8's limitations.
  • Utility Weapon: Aside from ramming into foes at high speeds, Dashman's ability "Dash" can be used as a Flash Step to obtain powerups just out of reach.
