Kitty May Cry (喵之旅人) is a 3D open world adventure Platform Game developed by Chinese indie studio Gamera Games and YLS Program.
Set in a colourful, radiant island world without humans, players are in control of Kitty, a little black cat who crash-landed on his rocket, and is searching his bagpack buddy Buggy, as well as locating assorted spare parts for him to explore the outside world. Wait, what?
As of 2023, the current gameplay lasts for around an hour (give or take losing some lives and restarting some levels). An Expansion Pack is scheduled sometime around late 2023.
The game is a recepient of China's 2023 Bilibili Game Awards. It's equal parts short, adorable, and all kinds of charming, especially for cat lovers.
Kitty May Explore and Get Tropes:
- And the Adventure Continues: The final stage ends with Kitty boarding a sea-train (as in, one that travels on the waters) bound to leave the island.
- Animate Inanimate Object: Kitty's best friend is a talking bagpack named "Baggy". Who's designed with a feline motif as well... wat.
- Cats Are Lazy: Downplayed with the player character, Kitty, who's introduced waking up from a lazy nap but otherwise content with running all around the island. Played straight with the white cat, another feline who shows up in the same opening scene with Black Cat... and is content lounging around it's entire screentime.
- Cats Hate Water: Falling into a water-related obstacle is enough to cost Kitty a life! Combined with Super Drowning Skills. Although Kitty could position himself to land on his back, which allows him to float a little in shallow waters.
- A Dog Named "Dog": Starring a black kitten named Kitty and his bagpack sidekick, Baggy. There's also an otter NPC named Otto.
- Double Jump: Kitty can jump twice in mid-air, in a skill the game called "Multi-Jump". Provided if he's not holding an object.
- Furry Reminder: Kitty the cat has a slight Verbal Tic when conversing with NPC characters, with his dialogue peppered with "Nyan nyan".
- No Plot? No Problem!: You're an andromorphic kitten on an island, your bestie is a talking bagpack, you're searching for parts to repair your rocket, none of these makes sense because the game is just too darn cute for logic reasoning.
- Pressure Plate: Several closed doors can be opened by stepping on plates, and Kitty needs to locate wooden blocks for the doors to stay open. Sometimes he needs to lug behind a block around because an area with two pressure-triggered doors could have only one block.
- Pun-Based Title: Based on "Devil May Cry", for no coherent reason considering there's nothing in common between the two games (a chibi-cat platformer and a demon slaying badass?).
- Vent Physics: Some of the ledges are too high for Kitty to reach, even with the Multi-Jump, but there are vent mechanisms Kitty can activate and send a pillar of air allowing him to float upwards.
