G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout is a Third-Person Shooter based on the G.I. Joe franchise that was developed by IguanaBee and released in North America by GameMill Entertainment and in Europe by Maximum Games in October 2020 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, with a Microsoft Windows version released in December of that same year.

Cobra causes havoc once again by using a device called the Blackout Sphere to knock out all electrical equipment in the world, resulting in their takeover of the world. GI Joe has to fight back against Cobra to end their scheme.

This game contains the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Cobra successfully takes over the world in this adaptation and dominates the world with their army of Mecha-Mooks.
    • Sci-Fi was something of a background character among the Joes but in the modern era, he uses drones and other material to become one of the most valuable team members.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: Cobra Commander is no longer a Dirty Coward and quite happy to mix it up with the Joes himself. He does run away a few times, though, when Scarlet and Roadblock want to kill him.
  • And the Adventure Continues: The game ends with Roadblock and Mainframe receiving an alert of yet another Cobra threat needing to be stopped.
  • Artificial Stupidity: One flaw the game has is that the AI-controlled partner barely does anything helpful for the player at all.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Cobra takes over the world in the first act after shutting down all of the electronics in the world.
  • Doomsday Device: The Blackout Sphere completely defeats the entirety of the world's militaries and governments so that Cobra rules the world in less than a year.
  • Dual Boss: There are two boss fights where two opponents are faced at once. The first fight is against Zartan and Firefly, while the second fight occurs in the last level and is against Destro and the Baroness.
  • Expy: The Blackout Sphere is one for the Pyramid of Darkness, why it wasn't simply called that is anyone's guess.
  • Family-Friendly Firearms: GI Joe and Cobra both use laser guns rather than normal guns. Averted with the fact they have knives and the vehicles have machine guns.
  • Final Boss: The final boss fight is against Storm Shadow.
  • Frontline General: In a case of Adaptational Personality Change, Cobra Commander engages the GI Joes directly and helps carry off the plan to help him Take Over the World.
  • Hero Antagonist: Some levels, such as the tutorial about you as Stormshadow sabotaging the Joe's personal aircraft carrier, have the player control a member of Cobra, and most of them will have the level boss being one of the Joes.
  • La RĂ©sistance: GI Joe is reduced to this, being a handful of fighters against Cobra's entire military force.
  • Mecha-Mooks: Cobra has a massive army of robot soldiers that serve as your primary enemies throughout the game.
  • Plot Hole: Cobra has machinery that allows them to use their technology but GI Joe doesn't. However, Cobra ends up fighting drone weapons and machinery anyway. Plus, none of the GI Joe's energy weapons are affected.
  • Offscreen Villain Dark Matter: Everything electronic in the world is shut down by Cobra's Blackout Sphere but Cobra itself. Still, you have to wonder how they managed to occup the entire world.
  • Villain Protagonist: The game has you play agents of Cobra as often as GI Joe.
