And playing is half the battle.

A 1991 2D Platform Game released by KID and Taxan for the NES, based on the G.I. Joe franchise. Stationed across different locales, the terrorist organization C.O.B.R.A is wreaking havoc across the world, and it's up to the Joes to infiltrate the C.O.B.R.A bases and take them out. Gun down enemies, take on fearsome bosses and platform through several action-packed stages. You control any one of the five Joe team members, Duke, Snake-Eyes, Captain Grid-Iron, Rock n' Roll, or Blizzard in a side scrolling action game.

The game is a 2D action plaformer where you take control of three different members of the Joe team on various missions. Each stage has a designated "team leader" that is chosen for you, but you have the choice of two playable characters to join them. Each of the team members have their own unique attributes like different weaponry, jumping ability, melee attacks, shot types and stamina meters. You can swap between either using your long-range weapon or melee attacks with the Select Button, which adds quite a bit depth and strategy to the game. Throughout the game you find power ups that can upgrade your respective team members' health, abilities and weapons. The game also features varied controllable vehicles like the Buzzboar and Interrogator.

The game received a sequel in G.I. Joe: The Atlantis Factor In 1992.

This game contains examples of:

  • Big Bad: One C.O.B.R.A Member serves as the main enemy and boss of each mission.
    • Round 1: Range Viper
    • Round 2: Metal Head
    • Round 3: The Overlord
    • Round 4: Voltar
    • Round 5: Destro
    • Round 6: The C.O.B.R.A Commander
  • Bottomless Magazines: When you switch to "Melee" mode, you can press the up button to throw a bomb in a upward arc, which have infinite ammunition.
  • Character Select Forcing: You are given a designated "Team Leader" before each mission which is any one of the five playable characters.
  • Competitive Balance: Each of the Joe Team members all have their unique skills and abilities that affect gameplay.
  • It's a Wonderful Failure: You get a screen of the enemy character of the stage taunting you when you get a Game Over.
  • Jungle Japes: The first stage (1-1), which takes place in the Jungle.
  • Multiple Life Bars: Your three team members have their own health bars, so if one character is in trouble, you can switch to another one. If one of them dies, they're put of commission for the rest of the round, and losing all three members results in a Game Over.
  • Slippy-Slidey Ice World: Stage 2, which takes place in the Arctic.
  • Timed Mission: You have a Time limit to complete stages. The Second levels of each mission justifies this as the Joes are on a bomb-setting mission and have to escape the base before the bombs go off.
  • Underground Level: Stage 1-2 takes place in an underground cave.
  • Wall Crawl: You can grab onto certain walls to climb up them. You can differentiate them from the non-climbable walls by their surfaces.
