A mixed city building and Tower Defense game from Smug Marmot Studios, Exodus Borealis follows a small community of vupfox forced to flee their homeland and settle a small island. Unfortunately, said island is subject to periodic incursions of demonic invaders, fortunately, they're not that bright and are easily corralled into a killbox.

The game was released into early access on June 22nd, 2021.

Tropes:

  • Area of Effect: Blast towers shoot in a straight line that damages all Invaders in range and in a straight line in front of the tower.
  • Artificial Stupidity: While the Invaders are specifically stated to be not very bright, your colonists aren't that smart either. Unless careful use of the building priority system is taken they will work on random unfinished buildings.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: Played with, there are eight possible elements to upgrade towers with and certain elemental attacks that complement each other, increasing the total damage when attacks with those elements strike the same invader. As well as elements that contradict one another, decreasing damage.
  • Fantastic Naming Convention: Vupfox have English first names while their surnames are compound words, taking the first word from their mother's name and the second from their father's.
  • Fox Folk: The vupfox look like anthropomorphic foxes in colonial outfits.
  • Out Giving Birth, Back in Two Minutes: Pregnant vupfox have little to no decreased effectiveness as workers, and the morning they give birth they're back out on the job while their newborn is wandering around the island following one of their parents.
  • Proportional Aging: Vupfox reach adulthood at the age of 2 and live less than a decade. Of course, each season of the year only lasts one day so presumably there's some time compression.
  • Ridiculously Fast Construction: Most buildings are erected in minutes, once all the resources are gathered in one place.
  • Tech Tree: Though at present most tech paths are either straight lines or have only a couple branches. The exception being Gem Mining as it gives access to eight different elemental attack tracks.
  • Tower Defense: One side of the island is obscured by a mountain range with a narrow pass and gate through which demonic Invaders periodically arrive, exploding if they reach the settlement. To halt them one must construct a maze of walls filled with towers that can be upgraded with elemental gems in front of the gate.
