Asgard's Wrath is an action role-playing VR game developed by Sanzaru Games for the Oculus Rift.

Set in North Mythology, you play as a newly born God being guided by Loki as you grow and develop your abilities across the nine realms searching for several powerful Hero Stones, encountering many mythical beasts and beings in your travels, including other members of the Aesir and Vanir who are less then pleased with what you are doing on behalf of your mentor.

The game was released in 2019. A sequel Asgards Wrath II was released in 2023 on the Oculus Quest, expanding the premise across other mythologies.

Tropes:

  • Action Prologue: The game opens with the New God defeating a Kraken that Loki was previously fighting before they appeared.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: The New God possesses five different heroes in their journey. Ingrid the shieldmaiden, Stikken the smuggler, Risa the half-giant, and Frodi the hermit.
  • Affably Evil: Loki is nothing but pleasant to the New God despite his loathsome reputation. That all goes out the window come the ending when he tries to kill them once he has what he wants.
  • Authority Sounds Deep: Odin, the Top God of the Aesir, is voiced by the very deep voiced David Sobolov.
  • Devious Daggers: The infamous trickster Loki is often seen twirling and playing games with his daggers.
  • Gender Flip: Unlike most depictions of the watchman of the gods, Heimdall is portrayed here as a woman.
  • God Was My Co-Pilot: The god in question being the New God, who assists the mortal's they encounter by possessing them.
  • Jerkass Gods: The Aesir are not exactly shown at their best here. Týr is a Blood Knight who toys with the lives of mortals even those that worshipped him, Thor is a boisterous and easily angered oppressor of the Giants, Hel wishes to unleash her undead army on Midgard, and all of them regard the New God as an upstart, with Odin even banishing them to Jötunheim when they are found with the stolen Mjolnir. Loki is the sole god, besides Heimdall, who treats the New God with any decency, and of course that turns out to all be an act by the trickster.
  • Rage Helm: The helmet the god of war, Týr, wears is very scowling and pointy with massive horns.
  • "Ray of Hope" Ending: The New God survives Loki's treachery but he escapes nonetheless and leaves them in his place within the god of mischief's prison. However, Heimdall assures you all is not lost by handing you an Ankh.
  • Treacherous Quest Giver: Shock of all shocks, Loki wasn't trustworthy. The entire plot of the game was a scheme of his to escape his imprisonment from the void. The tavern you frequent between missions and all who dwelled there, (save for Heimdall and brief visitations from Thor and Odin) were just illusions meant to provide a comfortable veneer to his barren prison, and thanks to the New God he succeeds, leaving them in the illusion.
