The fourth legendary king of Rome, is traditionally believed to have reigned from around 642 BC to 617 BC.

Much like Numa Pompilius, Ancus did little to expand the borders of Rome and only fought wars to defend the territory. He built Rome's first prison.

He fortified as far away as the west bank. He also founded a port of Ostia Antica on the Tyrrhenian Sea. He established Rome's first salt mine as well as Rome's first aqueduct. Also built the first bridge across the Tiber River.

He completed the conquest of the Latium people and as Rome grew and used diplomacy to peacefully unite surrounding cities into alliance with Rome.

He died a natural death and was Rome's last latin king.
