Tullus Hostilius was the third legendary king of Rome, succeeding Numa Pompilius. He is said to have reigned from around 673 BC to 642 BC. Tullus Hostilius is often seen as a warlike and aggressive ruler, in contrast to the peaceful reign of his predecessor.

One of Tullus Hostilius's most notable actions was the destruction of Alba Longa, a rival city to Rome. Tullus Hostilius settled a dispute between sets of triplets from Rome and Alba Longa by having them engage in a combat known as the "Horatii and Curiatii". After Rome's victory, Tullus Hostilius razed Alba Longa to the ground and resettled its inhabitants in Rome.

Also attributed with instituting religious and civic reforms. He is said to have established the office of Curio Maximus, responsible for leading religious ceremonies, and promoted the worship of the god Jupiter. He is also associated with organizing Roman society into military units called "centuries."

According to tradition, Tullus Hostilius met a tragic end. He was reportedly struck by lightning as a punishment from the gods for failing to properly carry out his religious duties. His death is seen as a cautionary tale about the importance of maintaining proper reverence for the gods.
