Trivia / The Trouble with Harry

Go To

  • The Cast Showoff: John Forsythe first appears in the film with his character singing the Raymond Scott-Mac David ditty "Flaggin' the Train to Tuscaloosa".
  • Creator's Oddball: Hitchcock's only full-fledged comedy (albeit a Black Comedy) after he'd cemented his Master of Suspense title for good, made as a Breather Episode for himself after the demanding shoots of his previous few films.
  • Star-Making Role: For Shirley MacLaine.
  • What Could Have Been: Hitchcock's preference was to reunite the leads of To Catch a Thief and have Cary Grant as Sam and Grace Kelly as Jennifer, but Grant was too expensive for what Hitchcock envisioned as a smaller-budget film, and Kelly had contract issues with her home studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. For a while Hitchcock toyed with another To Catch a Thief castmember, Brigitte Auber, as Jennifer, before realizing a French actress in a movie set in Vermont wouldn't really work. William Holden was the next choice for Sam, but things didn't work out.
  • Shortly after the release of the film, a novelty song called "The Trouble with Harry" was released by Alfi and Harry — actually Ross Bagdasarian Sr. (who'd been in Rear Window) under a pseudonym. Despite claiming to be "inspired" by the movie, the title is the only connection between the two.note  Still, it somehow managed to chart at #44 on the Billboard in the US and at #15 in the UK, and was even covered by Les Baxter.
