Trivia / The Trouble with Girls

Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: The film didn't do much business in theatres, released as the bottom half of a double bill with the Raquel Welch vehicle Flareup (but it later had a good run on the drive-in movie circuit). But, rare for an Elvis movie, it got some positive reviews, including a rave in the New York Times.
  • Breakaway Pop Hit: The film itself tanked, but "Clean Up Your Own Back Yard" was a Top 40 hit for Elvis in 1969.
  • The Cast Showoff: Frank Welker's character gets a brief solo bit in the Chatuaqua show where he does a funny, Donald Duck-ish voice
  • Saved from Development Hell: This film had a weird decade-long gestation period. It was first announced in 1959, then almost went into production the next year with Glenn Ford in the lead (and Elvis Presley rumored to be up for a supporting role), but then got dropped, with the screenplay still kicking around Hollywood. This project eventually got intertwined with another Chatauqua-themed story, based on a novel, with Dick Van Dyke attached to it around 1964. It bounced between MGM and Columbia Pictures for a few years, with Van Dyke dropping out, before MGM finally secured Elvis to star in it at the end of 1968.
  • Working Title: Chatauqua. The change to the more rollicking The Trouble With Girls was in part because of fear that people wouldn't pronounce the original title correctly.
