Trivia / The Masque of the Red Death

The short story

  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Due to its frequent use in Stephen King's novel The Shining, many readers misquote the final line of the story as "And the Red Death held sway over all!". It's actually "And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all."
  • Post-Release Retitle: When the first edition of the story was published in 1842, it carried the title "The Mask of the Red Death". When the revised final edition was published in 1845, the title was changed to the now-familiar "The Masque of the Red Death", taking emphasis away from the cloaked figure and onto the masquerade ball itself, probably to let readers know Prospero and his friends are supposed to be the evil ones here.

    • The Discworld book The Light Fantastic has a summoned Death claim he's in a hurry to get back to a party before midnight, because that's when (the partygoers think) he'll remove his mask.
"I hope it is a good party," said Galder.
AT THE MOMENT IT IS, said Death levelly. I THINK IT MIGHT GO DOWNHILL VERY QUICKLY AT MIDNIGHT.
    "Why?"
THAT'S WHEN THEY THINK I'LL BE TAKING MY MASK OFF.
    • The sixth The Dark Tower book, Song of Susannah, sees the characters visiting a town around Prospero's castle as the Red Death holds sway.
    • The Phantom of the Opera: The Phantom's Red Death costume is usually one of the constants from book to the myriad adaptations, when the Bal Masque is included.
    • "Beneath the Mask" from the Persona 5 soundtrack references the story explicitly, giving a creative interpretation to the Red Death as being oddly similar to the protagonist.

The film

  • Billing Displacement: Hazel Court is billed before Jane Asher; Jane plays Francesca, the female lead while Hazel is in the supporting role of Juliana. This is presumably because she was more recognisable for her roles in horror films, notably The Curse of Frankenstein.
  • Creator Backlash: Roger Corman wasn't pleased with the final masque sequence, as it was shot in only one day and he felt the English crew worked slower than a Hollywood one would have. He described the sequence as "the greatest flaw" in the film.
  • Dawson Casting: Hop-Toad, played by the 36-yr. old Skip Martin, is in love with Esmeralda, played by 8-yr. old Verina Greenlaw, who is supposed to be an adult female.
  • Prop Recycling: The film reused sets from Becket.

    • The Bell Witch song "Beneath the Mask" samples some dialogue from the film, in which Prospero confronts the Red Death and assumes him to be a messenger of Satan.
    • The second Theatre of Tragedy album "Velvet Darkness They Fear" samples dialog from the film in several tracks.
  • Uncredited Role:
    • The actors playing the various death figures at the end are uncredited. Some can't be identified due to the make-up — but John Westbrook played the Red Death, Michael Aldridge the White Death and Arnold Diamond the Yellow Death (all three are recognisable).
    • Bill Owen as a male dancer.
