Bill Owen, MBE, born William John Owen Rowbotham (14 March 1914 — 12 July 1999), was a British actor best known for starring in Last of the Summer Wine as Compo for 27 years.
He made his first appearance in The '40s and was a familiar face in The Rank Organisation's films. Peter Rogers had hoped for him to be a regular in the Carry On... Series, but Owen only appeared in four of the early films before dropping out to focus on theatre.
Alongside his acting work, he was also a songwriter during The '60s. In 1971, he played the lead in the short-lived Coppers End and in 1973, he was cast in his most famous role - the scruffy, working-class Compo Simmonite in Last of the Summer Wine - a role he would play until his death at the age of 85.
