Trivia / Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny

Go To

  • Box Office Bomb: Budget: $20 million. Box office: $13.9 million. Despite this, it became vindicated by home video.
  • California Doubling: The Rock & Roll History Museum (which is called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in real life) is The House of the Book performance hall and library building at the American Jewish University, Brandeis-Bardin Campus in Simi Valley, California.
  • The Danza: Despite the fictional nature of the story, Kyle Gass goes by his first and last real names, with Jack Black going by "JB" or "Jables" throughout (even having been addressed by his real name in the original series). Jack's character is indirectly implied to also have the last name Black in the credits - though he's called Jables there, his fictional parents are listed as Bob and Betty Black.
  • Development Gag: The climactic car chase evolved from a crew member's joke to Liam Lynch that this film was "the last movie you'd expect to have a car chase."
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: The movie features several alumni from Mr. Show, where Black was a featured member for two seasons — Paul F. Tompkins appears as the open mic host, and John Ennis and Jay Johnston make cameos as two of the gang members who beat up Jack (the guy in the tiger mask and the guy who can't retain his fake accent, respectively).
  • One-Book Author: Jack Black and Kyle Gass's only screenwriting credits, and Liam Lynch's only feature directorial effort. While proud of the film, Black was so distraught by its failure that he vowed never to write a screenplay again.
  • Popularity Redo: The film recycles many gags from the lesser-known HBO series the film derives from.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting: Troy Gentile who played Jable as a child looks and emotes very similar to Jack Black. He also played a child Nacho Libre the same year.
