  • First Appearance:
    • General Martok, who becomes a vital player to the Myth Arc.
    • Worf, in this series at least. Though Worf has already been on the station in an episode of The Next Generation.
  • Method Acting: A fine example by Andrew Robinson as Garak in the "root beer" scene. He genuinely looked disgusted at the taste of root beer.
  • Throw It In!: The "root beer" scene between Quark and Garak was written at the last minute because, once filming was over, they figured out they were short a couple minutes on the episode and needed one more scene. Then, once the effects for the battle scenes were complete, the episode came in long and the root beer scene was nearly cut. Ron Moore fought tooth and nail to keep it in, as it was his favorite part of the episode. It's now remembered as one of the best examples of Humans Through Alien Eyes in the canon.
  • Troubled Production:
  • What Could Have Been: The plot of what would eventually become "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost" was originally pitched to close Season 3 and open Season 4. However, Paramount suggested they "shake things up," leading to them adding Worf and having Klingons as enemies again.
  • Writing by the Seat of Your Pants: The introduction of Worf and the Klingon campaign against the Cardassians was not intended as part of the overall Myth Arc of the show, "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost" was the planned season opener until the decision to bring in Michael Dorn as Worf into the show. While Ira Steven Behr still felt the Klingon-as-antagonist arc (which lasts until mid season-five) was out of place on the show, him and many of the writers agree this did serve to build up the Dominion as a threat even further.
  • Wag the Director: Michael Dorn had two stipulations for joining the show: no more using him to prove the villains threat and wanted to be clearly different from other Klingons. Worf beating up Martoks' son to get his attention, plus ordering prune juice at Quarks, was to set the new tone for Worf on DS9.
  • You Look Familiar: J.G. Hertzler returns to Star Trek as General Martok. He had previously played Sisko's Vulcan CO aboard the USS Saratoga in "Emissary".
