• Creator Backlash: Ronald D. Moore later admitted that the Failsafe Failure that gets the storyline underway (as well as O'Brien being conveniently knocked unconscious) was a pretty hackneyed plot device, but that the writers couldn't think of anything better in the time that they had, and just hoped that the rest of the story would be strong enough that the audience would overlook it. Fortunately, the common consensus seems to be that they succeeded in this goal and then some.
• Playing Against Type: Tony Todd, who's best known for playing and voicing many a villain or intimidating characters, portrays the tortured yet kind adult/elderly Jake.
• Real-Life Relative: Melanie is played by Rachel Robinson, daughter of Andrew Robinson (Garak).
• What Could Have Been: Adult Jake was going to be Cirroc Lofton with old age makeup, but the resulting Jake wasn't very convincing, so they went with Tony Todd.
• You Look Familiar: Adult Jake is played by Tony Todd, who also played Worf's brother Kurn.
