Trivia / Spies in Disguise

  • All-Star Cast: Will Smith, Tom Holland, Rashida Jones, Karen Gillan, DJ Khaled, Ben Mendelsohn, Rachel Brosnahan (her first voice-over role, no less), Masi Oka... this film has a very impressive cast, to say the least.
  • Box Office Bomb: Budget: $100 million; Box office: $171.6 million. This film received muted marketing months after the Disney/Fox merger was completed and its final release date was a mere month after Disney's own Frozen II. Disney later shuttered Blue Sky Studios two years later which led to this being their final film. At that time of their closing, an adaptation of NIMONA was scrapped (with almost everything from the voice work to the soundtrack being finished at the time of its cancellation) when it was halfway into production until it was resurrected by Annapurna Pictures and Netflix in 2023.
  • Fake American: British actor Tom Holland fakes an American accent again as Walter.
  • Playing Against Type: Masi Oka is best known for his roles as dorky nerds. In this film he voices Kimura, an antagonistic Yakuza arms dealer.
  • Release Date Change: Originally set for January 18, 2019, the film got pushed back to April 19, then settled on September 9, and then it was moved to Christmas Day after the Disney/Fox merger, making it the first (and only) Blue Sky Studios film to be released by Disney.
  • So My Kids Can Watch: DJ Khaled took a role in the movie for his son Asahd.
  • What Could Have Been: According to some production art leaked online, there would have been a female antagonist named Gamblina. It is unknown how big of a role she would play, but she ended up being cut from the movie. Her character model still appears in the movie, but only at the very end when Lance and Walter stop some random criminals before riding off together.
