Trivia / Shaun Micallef's Mad as Hell

Go To

  • The Cast Showoff:
    • Emily Taheny is usually called upon should any singing be required, being the lead vocals in a couple of the season end songs and providing the vocalisations in the Season 7 theme song.
    • Christie Whelan Brown, with her extensive musical theatre background, also often gets called upon for vocals since joining the cast.
  • Corpsing: Shaun is frequently seen smirking at a guest's (or his own) joke and occasionally bursts out laughing in the middle of one (see the clip under Bait And Switch Comparison above).
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Even though it's largely a topical show, the first season was released on DVD. As of mid 2015, none of the other seasons had been released and the first season is now very difficult to find. That said, old seasons occasionally pop up on iView to stream, there are numerous full episodes available on Youtube and a good number of segments of the show end up on its YouTube channel anyway.
    • Somewhat remedied, with all episodes (except for the entirety of season two) having been made available for purchase on both iTunes and Google Play, although this seemed to have stopped after season 9.
  • Life Imitates Art: Darius Horsham, an Expy of Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, would regularly refer to Shaun as an "economic girly-man" (an insult that actually originated with Arnold Schwarzenegger). In mid October 2014, Cormann referred to the Opposition Leader Bill Shorten as such. Naturally, the following week Darius was asked to comment on it:
Darius: Don't look at me. I'm not responsible for putting the words into his mouth.
  • Production Posse: Shaun bought somewhat of an entourage with him to Mad As Hell:
    • Roz Hammond and Francis Greenslade both worked with Shaun on The Micallef Program. Francis also appeared on Micallef Tonight, Welcher & Welcher, and Full Frontal, the former two created by Shaun.
    • Stephen Hall was a writer for Newstopia and Talkin' 'bout Your Generation. He was a writer for the first season and appeared uncredited a couple of times, then began appearing as a regular cast member beginning in season 2.
    • Gary McCaffrie and Michael Ward (writers on the show) have been writing with Shaun since Full Frontal.
    • Jon Olb (director) has directed Shaun in Newstopia, Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation, Shaun's New Year's Rave and Micallef Tonight.
    • Yuri Worontschak (composer), Penny Southgate (set designer), Gail Mayes (costumes) and Karchi Magyar (hair and makeup) all played the same roles in most of Shaun's previous shows.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Tosh Greenslade was a big fan of Shaun's previous works, so was more than excited to have his first regular TV job working with him.
  • Prop Recycling: The Tyrrel Corp. chair from Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation is in the background.
    • A more literal example, the Micallef Tonight that hangs on the set was apparently rescued from a dumpster after being thrown out after the closure of the old Channel 9 Studios in Richmond.
  • Real-Life Relative: Averted - despite sharing the same surname, Francis and Tosh Greenslade aren't related.
