YMMV / Shaun Micallef's Mad as Hell

Go To

  • Awesome Moments: Season 11 started with the Kraken getting replaced with a dancing robot, but in Episode 8 the Kraken returns and curb-stomps the robot.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • A minor case (at the time, anyway), but it does get noticeably shocked laughter from the studio audience.
Shaun: Aung San Suu Kyi, not turning up on the first day of Parliament in Burma a few weeks back. Not a very good look, but if you know her history, you know that she's used to working from home.
    • Shaun scolding his Nonna for watching the show despite having taken the television away can be seen as harsh, him keeping the bit going for a minute is funny, when he ends it by saying it's fine because she's dead it's hilarious.
    • After Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was fined $250 for not wearing a life jacket in a dinghy, Shaun praised him for "continuing the theme of Liberal Prime Ministers ignoring water safety," a reference to the probable drowning of Harold Holt.
    • "Coming up, lab-grown meat - how tasty is it?" Since this is accompanied by a graphic of a labrador, it gets outright horrified laughter from the studio audience.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Darius Horsham is one of the most memorable parts of the show.
  • Funny Moments: The show is a veritable treasure trove of hilarity, but one real-life instance from Nationals Leader Michael McCormack manages to put their best writers to shame:
Shaun: Here's Michael McCormack's - for lack of a better word - "answer" to a question about the budget surplus:
Michael McCormack: Yes, uh, uhh, a surplus is-is a number that I know that uh, is important to get the books back in balance and that's what we've done. Uh, Labor, well they wouldn't know what the definition of a surplus was, I mean, they-they haven't produced one since 1989 when, uh, Cher was singing, ah, "If I Could Turn Back Time". Of course, we all, uh, all remember that, uh, vision, ah, of her on that, uh, navy ship, I mean, and there you go again. Labor didn't even build navy ship and they had 6 years of, 6 years of opportunity! Didn't give a ship! Didn't give a ship at all, about, uh, making sure we built the infrastructure to increase defense capability. Uh, if Labor could only turn back time, who knows what might happen?
Shaun:...Wow. He's even more impressive than Scott (Morrison). That-that stream of consciousness beat-poet quality is rare in somebody not on acid.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Mark Coles Smith regularly appeared in the Curiosity Cul-de-sac sketches, a parody of Mystery Road and other recent crime dramas filmed on location in rural areas. In 2022, Mark would star in the actual Mystery Road: Origin miniseries. The show acknowledged this in a Series 14 sketch, comparing it to Shaun doing the same thing when he appeared in SeaChange a year after parodying it on The Micallef Program.
