Welcher & Welcher is an Australian Work Com that aired on the ABC for one series of eight episodes in 2003, created by and starring Shaun Micallef. The series revolves around the eponymous law firm, run by Quentin Charles Welcher (Q.C.) and his wife/office manager Kate (Robyn Butler). The supporting cast included Francis Greenslade as solicitor Paul Cohen, Santo Cilauro as IT manager Griffin Griggs, Anita Smith as Quentin's personal assistant Jan and Nina Liu as receptionist Tia.

This series provides examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Paul Cohen is frequently called Peter. At one point Quentin calls him Brutus and Paul "corrects" him to Peter.
  • Accuse the Witness:
    • Quentin repeatedly does this while trying to prove his son Winslow innocent of theft, going through 130 other students before being called out on it. When he accuses Larry the groundskeeper, he manages to get a confession, but Winslow later admits in private that he did take the money.
    • He does this again in Claude Buzzo's assault and robbery trial, after seemingly getting the details mixed up with another trial he's supposed to be handling, only to be proven right.
  • As Herself: Sigrid Thornton appears in "Hypothetically Speaking", when Quentin takes a job as a legal advisor to the show's she's working on. Newsreader Ian Henderson also appears.
  • Big Blackout: In "Heat", the building's power cuts out due to a heatwave. Quentin gets most of the staff and a few clients trapped in a stairwell.
  • Boarding School: The Welchers have a tradition of going to Broadshadows Military Academy.
  • Buffy Speak: The firm's IT manager Griffin says that he was looking for an "electrical sad-face plaque", meaning a powerpoint. This may be because he had just bumped his head on the desk.
  • High Turnover Rate: The firm has a new articled clerk every episode.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Griffin, to the point of failing to make the connection between a computer not working and the entire building's power being out. He thinks he's dealing with a computer virus.
  • Hypocritical Humour: After Kate successfully defends a group of textile workers from an abusive workplace situation, she hires one of them to make a dress for a "Women in the Law" dinner and proves no better than their previous boss.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: Kate telling Quentin why he'd make a terrible office manager.
Kate: You need to be immediate. You're forever postponing things.
Quentin: (scoffs) Well, we'll talk about that tomorrow.
  • Identical Stranger: Paul Cohen and Claude Buzzo, both played by Francis Greenslade.
  • Inadvertent Entrance Cue: When an adult magazine shopkeeper tells Quentin, "We get all sorts in here," Paul enters in the background only to leave upon noticing Quentin.
  • I Like My X Like I Like My Y: While preparing to work all night on a case, Quentin - apropos of nothing - asked for his coffee "straight and black, like my women".
  • Literal-Minded: A lot of the humour:
Jan: (trying to tell Quentin about a phone call) Tia says it's long-distance from Perth.
    Quentin: Well, she's right. (leaves)
  • One Last Job: Name-checked by Freddie Thomas when he's arrested for counterfeiting. Quentin points out that he's 81 and should have retired long ago.
  • Pushed in Front of the Audience: Quentin is forced to fill in for a TV presenter he accidentally gave food poisoning. He doesn't get too far, as the show is abruptly cancelled mid-broadcast due to him violating a restraining order from Sigrid Thornton and replaced by an episode of Mother & Son.
  • Right Behind Me: Quentin mocks the idea of "Peter" defending Gary Ryan just as Paul enters the room.
Quentin: I was talking about another Paul Cohen when you came in.
    Paul: Peter.
  • Significant Monogram: Welcher's initials lead at least one judge to assume he's a Queen's Council.
  • The Stinger: A few episodes end like this, with one having Quentin Breaking the Fourth Wall to explain to Paul that the episode was running short by about 90 seconds.
  • Two-Timer Date: In the last episode, Quentin tries to handle two trials in the same building, running back and forth between two courtrooms and naturally getting the details mixed up - until the two cases turn out to be connected after all.
  • Verbal Backspace:
Quentin: You worry too much. Your mother is as healthy as a horse.
Kate: She had cancer last year!
Quentin: Well, a very skinny horse.
