- Acclaimed Flop: While reviews for generally positive, the awkward release timing combined with an extremely small print ruin doomed Shantae as a financial failure. This also caused Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution to get canned until 2023 due to WayForward being unable to find a publisher for the sequel.
- Creator-Driven Successor: To the Sabrina Games that were also developed by Wayforward for the GBC, which shares a game engine and similar graphics and spritework. Shantae even shares the same walk cycle as Sabrina.
- Late Export for You: The game was initially only released for North America, likely as a result of WayForward's difficulties with finding a publisher. A worldwide release would not be made available until over a decade later on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013.
- No Port For You: Prior to 2023, the game was exclusively released on Nintendo platforms, such as the original version on Game Boy Color, and subsequent ports to the Nintendo 3DS. Despite eventually releasing on PlayStation consoles in 2023, it remains the only title in the Shantae series to never get a PC port.
- What Could Have Been:
- An early concept for the game involved it being 2½D and on the PlayStation or PC.
- Shantae could initially summon animals. This was reworked into the dance transformations.
