Trivia / Red Dwarf Season VII "Nanarchy"

Go To

  • Creator Backlash:
    • While Craig Charles and Danny John-Jules weren't overly fond of Series VII in general, they really weren't too happy with this one. In particular, their disgust at the scene where Kryten communicates with the nano-Red Dwarf is quite evident during the DVD Commentary.
    • Norman Lovett also criticised his own performance, believing "I've lost it, I've just lost it... it's all gone".
  • Deleted Scene: Scenes cut from the episode:
    • More scenes of Kochanski and Kryten trying to make Lister feel better about losing his arm, only for Cat to butt in and make him feel worse. As they talk about Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, Cat says that he wouldn't have won if it had been an arm-wrestling contest.
    • More discussion on the nanobots, with Kochanski saying that they are smaller than a supermodel's lunch bill. She suggests how they could repair Lister's arm from his "excess tissue"; Cat agrees, saying that his "butt has spread more than most religions".
    • Continued discovery, including more time in the newly acquired buggy on the Red Dwarf planetoid.
    • With the team so pleased to have Holly back, his part in the episode became a little over-written, and so a few of Holly's jokes were cut. These show that the Holly inside the wristwatch is more deranged than ever, possibly because he has had to endure further and extended isolation. He's also realised that "he's no longer a woman", explaining the reintroduction of Norman Lovett instead of Hattie Hayridge. Holly also continually tells them the time as they discuss where the nanobots could be.
    • More of Kochanski realising that the nanobots are onboard Starbug.
  • Edited for Syndication: Cut from a 2012 repeat:
    • Kryten's recap line mentioning "Last week on Red Dwarf...".
    • Cat's line, "It's a real son of a bitch about your arm, bud".
  • Reality Subtext: The plot involves Lister trying to cope with the loss of his arm. Doug Naylor has a prosthetic leg, having lost one in a car crash.
  • Role Reprise: Norman Lovett returns as Holly, having not played the role since Series 2, nine years prior.
  • Technology Marches On: Prosthetic limbs are, in the real world, of course much more advanced even today than the one Kryten makes for Lister in this episode. There are prosthetic arms that can not only pick up a ball but pick up an egg without cracking it.
  • Throw It In!: For Holly's return to the cast, he had to give a complicated explanation of the episode's events. According to a later interview, Norman Lovett couldn't pronounce a particularly difficult word in the script, which was Holly-ish enough to make it into the episode as "that word I can't say".
  • What Could Have Been: In earlier scripts, Red Dwarf was going to be revealed to have been stolen by Talkie Toaster.
