Trivia / Mario Golf

  • Blooper:
    • In 64, the Boo Classic tournament is spelled "Boo Clasic" on the menu.
    • Wario’s shoes are incorrectly colored pink in 64. Oddly, all official artwork of him has him wearing his usual green shoes.
    • When Luigi taunts in Toadstool Tour, the L on his cap is mirrored.
    • Metal Mario's name isn't properly capitalized on the scoreboard during a tournament, which can be odd, as there might be another Metal Mario playing in the tournament whose name is correctly capitalized.
    • Two of the players that can show up in a tournament in 64 are "Rutooo" and "Inpa". Given that other Zelda characters are playing in the tournament, they were likely intended to be Ruto and Impa.
  • Divorced Installment: We Love Golf! was another golf game made by Camelot, but was published by Capcom instead of Nintendo. Despite Nintendo not being involved with it, this game was pretty much a Mario Golf game without any ties to the Mario series.
  • Dummied Out:
    • The Virtual Console ports never implemented any means of connecting the GBC and N64 games, thus the functions relating to the connection were never accessible. This functionality is also disabled in the Nintendo Switch Online version despite being on the same system.
    • Since the online servers have long since been shut down, there's no way to legitimately unlock the Mario characters in Mobile Golf.
  • Exiled from Continuity: All of the Original Generation human characters stopped appearing after Advance Tour and probably won't return (except for collectible cameos in the Super Smash Bros. series). However, in Super Rush, while mainline characters are still prevalent, the game also features some new boss characters never seen in the mainline games.
  • Hey, It's That Sound!: The Nintendo 64 Mario Golf uses many sounds from other Mario games on the platform. Among others, the camera zoom sounds come from Super Mario 64, the menu navigation and pause sounds come from Mario Party, and the Speed Golf countdown comes from Mario Kart 64.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes:
    • Mobile Golf and Toadstool Tour have yet to see any kind of re-release. Given that the former heavily made use of mobile phone technology and the latter was released for the Nintendo GameCube, the majority of whose library has yet to be rereleased in any capacity, it's understandable.
    • Advance Tour can no longer be downloaded digitally due to the closure of the Wii U eShop.
    • The DLC for World Tour can no longer be downloaded due to the closure of the 3DS eShop in April 2024, leaving the only ways to obtain it legally as either already having it, buying a 3DS with it pre-installed, or buying a used 3DS that the previous owner downloaded it on.
  • Multiple Languages, Same Voice Actor: Charles Martinet voices Mario in both the English and Spanish commercials for the Game Boy game.
  • No Export for You: Mobile Golf was never released outside of Japan, likely because using a cellphone to play online wasn’t a thing anywhere else in the world at the time (2001).
  • Sequel Gap: World Tour (2014) was released around a decade after Toadstool Tour (2003) and Advance Tour (2004). Super Rush (2021) was released a little over seven years after World Tour.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Mario Golf Aces was considered as a possible name for Super Rush at one point, but the developers thought the final name better highlighted the spirit and speed of Speed Golf. It's also possible the name was changed to avoid confusion with Mario Tennis Aces.
    • During development of Mario Golf on the N64, Maple was also originally related to Princess Peach and was going to be named Plum, a name given to a different character in the final.
  • Word of God: Apparently, the writers got sick of writing the same story RPG modes in previous Mario Golf and Mario Tennis games where you had to raise a character who had their sights set on winning a tournament, making the reappearance of the Original Generation characters in the future extremely unlikely.
