Go To

  • Acting for Two:
    • Parker Simmons voices Mao Mao, King Snugglemagne, Ratarang, one of the Thickett Thieves, Slim Pigguns, and Farmer Bun.
    • Griffith Kimmins voices Badgerclops, Pinky, Kevin, and Chester.
    • Chris McCulloch voices Orangusnake, Boss Hosstrich, Benny, and Cluckins.
    • Most of the female sweetiepies (Save for Penny and Adorabat) and Ramaraffe are voiced by Debra Wilson.
    • A good chunk of the male sweetiepies are voiced by Tommy Blacha, including Chubbum, Lucky, Blue, Gary, and Chef Rhett.
  • Adored by the Network: Cartoon Network aired the preview (a full length episode) on June 1, 2019, and gave it a very generous dose of reruns, despite the show's official premiere not being until July 1.
  • All-Star Cast:
    • In a very stark contrast with the original English version, the Japanese dub has very well known Anime voice actors, at least for the protagonist trio: Mao Mao is voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki, Subaru Kimura voice Badgerclops and Adorabat is voiced by Rie Hikisaka, better known for playing Hana Nono aka Cure Yell, the main heroine of HuGtto! Pretty Cure.
    • The same goes, in some degree, with the Latin American Spanish dub, as the dub features many well-known voice actors, especially for the leads and some for the recurrent characters, mainly Alejandro Orozco (Mao Mao) and Lourdes Arruti (Adorabat).
  • Amateur Cast: Most of the voice actors for the series have had little to no voiceover roles prior to this show; the biggest name voice actor to be featured in the main cast so far on the show is Chris "Jackson Publick" McCulloch voicing Orangusnake. The most notable voice actors to have been featured so far are Clancy Brown as Shin Mao and Colleen Clinkenbeard as Mao Mao when he was a child.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices:
    • Young Mao Mao's voice actor is Colleen Clinkenbeard, a woman.
    • Clark Lockjaw is voiced by Lika Leong, Adorabat's actress.
  • Descended Creator:
    • Parker Simmons, the creator of the series, voices Mao Mao, King Snugglemagne, Ratarang, and several others.
    • Griffith Kimmins, Badgerclops's voice actor, is also a writer and storyboard artist for the show.
    • Executive producer Chris Prynoski voices Bao Bao and Mail Mole.
  • Denial of Digital Distribution: On 19 August 2022, the show was among the casualities of a plan to save HBO money following the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, causing it to be pulled from HBO Max.
  • Development Hell: Season 2 was announced at San Diego Comic Con 2020 and no word on its progress has been given since, likely due to complications from the COVID-19 pandemic and the Warner's mergers with AT&T and Discovery.
  • Distanced from Current Events: "Sick Mao", which deals with Mao Mao being sick, was pulled from the Cartoon Network app after the coronavirus outbreak. However, the episode was still available to watch through HBO Max until the series itself was removed.
  • Fandom Nod: In "Popularity Conquest", Mao Mao briefly dresses up as Robin, only for the king to complain that he "sees that one all the time", commenting on the infamy of that particular series' near-constant airtime (though that show's reruns were being dialed back when this show premiered, however).
  • He Also Did: The creator, Parker Simmons, also worked on OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes and Motorcity, and animated Dr. Mario With Lyrics.
  • Quietly Cancelled: Years have passed since the latest episode and second season announcement in 2020, with Cartoon Network maintaining silence on the subject, and the show creator only making a single tweet about it. Despite successful attempts to get #freemaomao trending, Cartoon Network remains silent on the subject, so most fans assume Cartoon Network has quietly disowned the show. In addition, it was removed from HBO Max alongside numerous other series in August 2022 and Cartoon Network has scrubbed all tweets and videos of it from their social media accounts.
    • The show appears to slowly be making a return to Cartoon Network, with it being allowed to be mentioned on social media again, and videos returning to their Youtube channel. However, notably the season 2 teaser was not one of the videos restored.
  • Real-Life Relative: In the Latin American Spanish dub, Mao Mao and Rufus' voice actors (Alejandro and Luis Fernando Orozco) are brothers in Real Life.
  • Series Hiatus: The season 1 finale aired in July 2020 and the show was renewed for a second season that same month. As of July 2022, Season 2 is yet to be released, making for a 3 year hiatus.
  • Screwed by the Network:
    • After airing all of the first half of new episodes and showing a few reruns in 2019, the show was quietly removed from its usual air times and had its reruns placed during 5am PT. It regained its usual runtimes when the second half of the first season aired in March 2020, however.
    • The show was greenlit for a second season... right before the Covid-19 pandemic. The series still remains in limbo.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Adorabat was, in an old teaser, an Ambiguous Gender character with Simmons simply replying to the question of Adorabat's gender as "Adorabat is... A bat." As of the series, she is referred to in feminine terms.
    • Badgerclops similarly was formerly Bearclops, and most assume his change of species was to avoid confusion with We Bare Bears.
  • Write What You Know: Parker Simmons has stated that Mao Mao's strained relationship with his father was partially based on his own experience of growing up the youngest in a family of nine children, and he would often struggle getting his attention.
