- Box Office Bomb: Budget, $20 million. Box office, $18.43 million. It had a mixed response, with most critics agreeing that Matthew Broderick was out of place in the film. It's since become a Cult Classic.
- Cast the Runner-Up: Richard Donner wanted to cast Kurt Russell as Navarre and Rutger Hauer as Marquet, the Bishop's Captain of the Guards. Russell turned down the role so Hauer filled in the part of Navarre instead.
- Playing Against Type: Often cast as imposing villains or antagonists, here Rutger Hauer actually gets to play The Hero. Perhaps not surprisingly, the original plan was for Hauer to play The Dragon, but he was recast as the hero when Kurt Russell dropped out of the film.
- What Could Have Been:
- Sean Connery was originally considered for Marquet.
- Dustin Hoffman and Sean Penn were offered the role of Phillipe Gaston.
- Donner once said that he had considered Mick Jagger for the Bishop.
- Donner offered Mel Gibson a role, but he was unavailable.
- The film was originally going to be closer to straight fantasy, with magic and monsters, but it was dialed back to a Deal with the Devil instead.
