Trivia / Geometry Dash

Go To

  • Ascended Fanon: The custom level "Demon Park", made in 1.2, was famous for being extremely hard even for custom levels made around that time, and is the sole reason the Demon difficulty exists.
    • There are several poster-sized art pieces representing heavy hitters in the custom level scene that have been used for official promotions by RobTop. The official 10th anniversary celebration video also features an animation starring many of the antagonists from famous community-made "boss fight" levels.
  • Colbert Bump: Expect an unknown composer to have a huge rise in popularity whenever a creator uses one of their songs in a popular level for the first time. For instance, the relatively unknown artist False Noise had their music increase in new viewership by 10 times when their song Shiver was used in the level Cold Sweat.
  • Content Leak: When the spin-off games were reuploaded to Google Play in December 2019, a rough version of 2.2's source code was used, leaking the Swing gamemode and other small features. However, the editor was locked and presumably contained more 2.2 features. RobTop noticed and updated the offending games to remove them. In 2021, some fans reverse-engineered the editor and replaced RobTop's servers to create "GDPS Editor."
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer:
    • On this news report on ChrisCredible, Geometry Dash is incorrectly referred as "Geometry Challenge."
    • After Npesta's reaction to verifying Kenos became a meme involving speedrunning, players had high hopes for Geometry Dash to be referenced in one of PewDiePie's "meme reviews." However, the resulting video had him refer Geometry Dash as its inspiration, The Impossible Game and Npesta as a "speedrunner" instead of a skilled player, to the point where RobTop poked fun of his error on Twitter.
    • In the official editor guide (created by TouchArcade members), it is stated that the Epic rating can give you 4 creator points. It actually gives you 3 creator points.
  • Demand Overload: On May 8th, 2021, the online servers went down for a few hours as a result of the game having its highest concurrent player count ever on Steam.
  • Development Hell: Update 2.2 took 6 years until it was finally announced to release in October 2023, 10 years after the game came out. Even then, that wasn't enough, as it then got delayed to November and when that wasn't enough, it got pushed back even further to December. It was finally released on December 19 that year.
  • Fandom Life Cycle: Stage 2 or 3 at this point.
    • It has previously been in Stage 0-4, then skipped to 6a, then went back to Stage 2, where it is believed that it is entering Stage 3.
  • Follow the Leader: Some level layouts have been popularized to the point of becoming small genres by themselves. One such is Nine Circles levels, after the eponymous Hard Demon from 2015. These levels must incorporate specific features to qualify, such as a heavy emphasis on difficult Wave gameplay, slanted rectangular blocks and a pulsating diamond pattern decor. Famous Nine Circle levels include Sonic Wave, The Hallucination and Sakupen Circles.
  • Meme Acknowledgment: The company and creator behind the "FIRE IN THE HOLE" sound effect revealed they were aware of the memes surrounding it in a Reddit post, finding it funny and even offering to put together a free pack of new sound effects for the Geometry Dash community.
  • Milestone Celebration: A video celebrating the game's 10th anniversary was released on RobTop's YouTube channel, which included community highlights and statistics alongside a release window for Update 2.2.
  • Official Fan-Submitted Content: Since this game heavily relies on the community, there are multiple example of this.
    • The most "official" among the levels are Gauntlets. They are made of levels hand-picked by RobTop, each Gauntlet containing five, and they give you actual character creator items by completion.
    • Map Packs, which consist of three community-made levels each. They were made within the first year of the game's existence (plus some were added a year later), which means many of the levels are not very high-quality (especially Insane and Demon levels). RobTop has abandoned the Map Pack system for this reason.
    • Also, there were two official Icon Contests. Half of the winner icons from the first contest were added to the Community Shop in 2.11; all the other ones will be added in 2.2.
  • Schedule Slip:
    • Update 2.0, being a very huge update, took 8 months compared to the normal 1-2 months.
    • After Update 2.0, which came out late August 2015, RobTop announced that he hoped to get updates out every 1-2 months. Update 2.1, also a huge update, took until January 16th, 2017 to come out.
    • Update 2.2, presumably a even huger update took at least 6 years to make and released on December 19, 2023 (although RobTop has previously stated he has finished it and is currently doing bugfixes).
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The Working Title for Geometry Dash was called Geometry Jump.
    • The 2.0 User Coins were originally just the normal coins tinted blue, but they are bronze/silver with a 'C' in the middle in the final.
    • The first teaser uses Ultimate Destruction by TMM43 as music. The level shown isn't in the final version, but elements of the gameplay are used in Base After Base.
    • The arrows on dash orbs were originally solid triangles, as seen in the 2.1 sneak peek showing off Fingerdash, but were changed to chevrons in the release of 2.1. Additionally, the dash orb that flips gravity was originally red. Instead, it is pink.
  • Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things: On January 30th, 2017, Geometry Dash was removed from the Steam Store and appeared to be on the verge of disappearing from the other two mediums of distribution as well. It was suggested that Newgrounds was involved, finally getting back at the countless users harassing audio moderators for not allowing them to upload the works of others (which is, by the way, against the rules) and constantly wheedling audio composers presumably to upload their songs to Newgrounds and to create songs simply to use them in Geometry Dash. It was later confirmed to be one musician who had flagged the game for using his music without permission and stating that he did not want his music to be used in the game. Although it seemed that Poor Communication Kills would've caused a stalemate, it was resolved when RobTop announced new measures to cut down on song theft.
