Trivia / Doonesbury

  • Defictionalization: When Joanie graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, the real Berkeley actually had her picture appear in the yearbook, and Garry Trudeau himself got to give a speech at the graduation (as well as pick up her diploma).
    • Alex Doonesbury appears in the real-life MIT email directory.
    • Andy Lippincott had his own real patch in the AIDS quilt.
    • Several Jimmy Thudpucker records were released on LP and 45, on Warner Bros and Windsong. He even has a Discogs page!
  • Series Hiatus: Trudeau put the strip on hiatus for nearly two years (from January 1983 to October 1984), making him the first major comic strip creator to do so, partly to work on the Doonesbury musical, and partly due to burnout. The strip didn't run at all, and many newspapers and readers turned to Bloom County as a substitute. It also paved the way for several other syndicated cartoonists (Gary Larson, Bill Watterson, and, very briefly after he turned 75, Charles M. Schulz) to take voluntary sabbaticals. Trudeau later took three months off in 1992 (but the strip just went into reruns).
