Trivia / Doctor Who S29 E1 "Smith and Jones"

Go To

  • Completely Different Title: The French title is "La Loi des Judoons" (Law of the Judoon).
  • Edited for Syndication: On the channel Watch, the execution of the person who attacked the Judoon with a vase was cut out from the episode.
  • First Appearance: Of Martha Jones and her family.
  • Recast as a Regular: Freema Agyeman had first appeared as Adeola Oshodi, a Torchwood One technician that was cyber-converted and eventually killed during the Battle of Canary Wharf in "Army of Ghosts". She was recast as companion Martha Jones here, with the explanation that Adeola was her cousin with whom she shared an Uncanny Family Resemblance.
  • Release Date Change: Was put back by a week at the last minute due to football coverage (after Doctor Who Magazine had already promoted the original date, and actually had to have all future issues put back a week to stay in sync with the TV series).
  • Throw It In!: The Doctor sarcastically mouthing along when Martha says "It's Bigger on the Inside!" was an ad-lib by David Tennant.
  • Trolling Creator: Russell T Davies had David Tennant say the line "Judoon platoon upon the Moon" as something of a joke. While Tennant usually has no problem performing in an Estuary English accent, his natural Scottish dialect makes it hard for him to say certain vowel sounds without traces of his own accent creeping in, a long oo being the hardest.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • For a number of drafts, a key element of the adventure involved the Doctor and the Plasmavore each trying to reach the hospital basement, where the TARDIS was hidden. Russell T Davies subsequently felt that this was too banal a plot strand, however, and decided to have the time machine left behind on Earth instead.
    • A set piece in which the Doctor and Martha flee from the Judoon by scaling down the outside of the hospital in a window cleaner's cradle had to be excised due to its length, but was later resurrected for "Partners in Crime".
  • Working Title: "Martha".
  • You Look Familiar:
    • For older viewers, the actress for the Plasmavore previously played a nurse who was attacked by the similarly vampiric Haemovores in "The Curse of Fenric". We are given no clues as to whether the two are linked.
    • Martha's mother was last seen as Sister Jatt in "New Earth". This one, though, is less obvious due to heavy makeup.
    • Martha's father was last seen in "Mindwarp" as Frax.
