Trivia / Doctor Who S28 E1 "New Earth"

Go To

  • Acting for Two: David Tennant and Billie Piper have to do the double duty of being the Doctor and Rose as well as Cassandra.
  • Corpsing: Billie Piper makes a valiant effort to hide her amusement during the "Goodness me, I'm a man!" scene.
  • Real Life Writes the Hairstyle: Rose is suddenly wearing her hair up in the episode's final scene, in order to hide Billie Piper's hair extensions from "The Christmas Invasion", which was still in production when the Cassandra drinks party sequence was filmed.
  • Recast as a Regular: Sister Jatt is played by Adjoa Andoh, who would go on to play Martha Jones's mother Francine in Series 3.
  • Recycled Set: The scenes taking place in the Sisterhood's industrial Intensive Care Unit were filmed in the since-demolished Ely Paper Mill in Grangetown, Cardiff, which also served as the location for the underground Nestene lair in "Rose".
  • Spared by the Cut: The Face of Boe was going to die in this episode and reveal his message, and the Doctor forced to let the care patients die to cure them. Davies apparently changed his mind after reading Steven Moffat’s introduction for the book The Season One Shooting Scripts. He joked about how Davies "creates interesting characters and then melts them", which helped change Davies’ mind and create a happier ending. The Face of Boe was also kept around, both because of Billie Piper’s decision to leave after Series 2, and the show’s renewal making Davies push it back to fit with that season.
  • Wag the Director: The episode came about because Billie Piper requested an opportunity to be funny, as a counterpoint to the often very serious material she had tackled in the first season.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • There were going to be more scenes focusing on the Duke of Manhatten and Frau Clovis.
    • As mentioned above, the Face of Boe was to die and deliver his message to the Doctor in this episode. Davies postponed the revelation after the series was renewed for another season.
    • Had Zoë Wanamaker been unavailable for filming, Davies would have introduced her evil sister "Roseanne".
  • Word of Saint Paul: In the DVD Commentary: David Tennant surmises that the Doctor had several adventure elsewhere between "The Christmas Invasion" and this episode.
  • Working Title: "Body Swap" and "The Sunshine Camp".
