Trivia / Bluey

Go To

  • Acting for Two:
    • In the Danish dub, Sonny Lahey voices Stripe and Pat, and many female characters are voiced by Sandra Bothmann.
    • In the Korean dub, Moon Nam-sook voiced Bluey, Wendy, and Tiny, while Um Sang-hyun voices Bandit, Rad, Sparky and McKenzie.
  • Adored by the Network: Since debuting on Disney Junior in 2019, it's become one of the channel's flagship series. As for Disney Channel, it takes up the majority of their weekday preschool block (to the point where it sometimes airs up to 100 times a week), and is also one of the rare shows to be aired outside of it. And finally, Bluey also frequents the "trending" section of Disney+. The show's success in the States has led to it getting a merchandise line and even a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
  • Amateur Cast:
    • Most of the cast have little to no experience in voice acting, or even acting in general. In particular, Bandit's voice actor David McCormack is the lead singer of the band Custard and a composer for film and TV scores, Uncle Stripe and Nana are voiced by the creator's own relatives, and all of the child characters are voiced by anonymous children of the production staff.
    • The Japanese dub zig-zags this, as it mix both newer voice actors with some long-time veterans, like Yui Horie as Coco and Minami Takayama as Judo.
  • Banned Episode:
    • "Teasing" and "Flat Pack" were temporarily pulled from the ABC after complaints. In specific, "ooga booga" was uttered in both of those episodes, which can be perceived as a racist remark towards Aboriginal Australians. The episodes were later redubbed, replacing the phrase with "shooby doowah."
    • The episode "Dad Baby" has never aired in North America, and is not present on Disney+, likely due to its theme of male play-pregnancy. However, the episode is available for purchase digitally through services such as iTunes, is included on region 1 DVDs,note  and from May 2024 onward, is now available for streaming on the Bluey YouTube channel.
    • "Family Meeting" was originally withheld from release in America. The episode, which involved Bandit 'fluffing' in Bluey's face, initially did not meet Disney's broadcast S&P. This decision was later reversed, and the episode has since been added to Disney+.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: Notably not for the main cast, but some of the guest stars and cameos have fallen under this.
    • The Wiggles blue skivvy wearer Anthony Field voices both Postie and Rusty's father.
    • Robert Irwin, one of the stars of Crikey! It's the Irwins and son of the late Steve Irwin, plays the toy store employee Alfie in "The Quiet Game".
    • Rose Byrne plays Chili's sister Brandy in "Onesies".
    • Natalie Portman cameos as the whale documentary narrator in "Whale Watching".
    • Lin-Manuel Miranda cameos as the horse Major Tom in "Stories".
  • Children Voicing Children:
    • The child characters are all voiced by children of the show's production crew.
    • In the Latin American Spanish dub, both Bluey and Bingo are also voiced by children.
  • Colbert Bump: David McCormack's role as Bandit has gotten increased attention for his band Custard.
  • Content Leak: Two of the final, then-unaired, episodes of Season 3– "Ghostbasket" and "Surprise!" – were accidentally shown early in India near the end of December 2023.
  • Corpsing: In "Unicorse", Bluey's voice actress sounds like she's trying not to laugh after Unicorse says his favorite food is children.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer:
    • When the ABC Kids iview app relaunched to collide with the premiere of the second season, the iOS App Store reported that the "entire second season, plus four bonus episodes" was specifically available inside the app. However, this was most likely a small mistake, confusing the pre-existing episodes from the first season with that from the second season, which was still broadcasting at the timenote .
    • Before the series was broadcast in the UK, some British media described Bandit as a typical Aussie dad who always had a beer in his hand. This is untrue, with the exception of "BBQ" (where he is with other adults, in a situation where having a beer is perfectly normal).
  • Creator's Favorite: Joe Brumm considers Rusty his favorite character.
  • The Danza: Chris Brumm voices Nana Heeler, whose first name is "Chris".
  • Defictionalization:
    • A real-life version of the Heeler family's house was created as part of an Airbnb service.
    • The same company that makes the official plushies for Bluey also made a physical puppet of Bob Bilby.
    • An official talking Chattermax plush was produced as an Amazon exclusive.
  • Descended Creator: Joe Brumm voices Gruber's Dad in "Markets" and a customer in "Kids", as well as the Chattermax toy. He also voiced Bandit in the 2016 pilot.
  • Follow the Leader: Some have noted that the episodes are similar in structure to Peppa Pig, though others have joked that it has "better parenting". Joe Brumm was actually a staff member on Peppa Pig and created Bluey as an Australian version of the show.
  • God Never Said That: It's commonly stated that Word of God confirmed that Bluey is a rainbow baby, a child born after a miscarriage. In fact, while Joe Brumm did state that Chilli had a miscarriage, he never specified if it was before or after Bluey's birth.
  • He Also Did: Before working on the show, Joe Brumm founded StudioJoho, an independent animation studio where he was the creator and director of Dan The Man.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: After complaints were filed to The ABC over the beginning of the episode being "fat-shaming", the original cut of "Exercise" has become this, as there's no legal way to watch it.
  • Out of Order: In countries that gets the show on both Disney+ and BBC iPlayer (or its regional variants BBC Player Malaysia and Singapore), the ordering of the episodes on both services are not consistent to each other. For one, Disney prefers setting them as three stories per episode, tripling the length of each episode but making the season a third as long instead. Additionally, episodes are apparently shifted around so the episode sequence on BBC (i)Player and Disney+ do not match.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Lin-Manuel Miranda, who voices Major Tom in "Stories", stated that he and his family were big fans of Bluey and that it was their most-watched show during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
  • Real-Life Relative:
    • Creator Joe Brumm's real-life mother and brother voice Nana Chris and Uncle Stripe, respectively (the latter also serves as the series' sound designer).
    • Jack's parents are voiced by married couple Hamish and Zoë Foster Blake.
    • In the Danish dub, Bluey and Bingo are voiced by sisters Sally and Simone Bergstrøm Søsted.
  • Short Run in Peru:
    • An episode from the third part of Season 3, "Cubby", briefly aired on Disney Russia before the third part was even announced.
    • "Surprise!" and "Ghost Basket" aired on the Indian Disney Channel feed towards the end of December 2023, before they were slated to air in Australia.
  • Uncredited Role: None of the English child actors are credited for privacy reasons. While a handful have been identified outside the show due to being established actors, the vast majority of the child voices remain unknown.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The 2016 animation sample has a radically brighter palette for the Heelers on top of an edgier looking logo while using the Real Song Theme Tune "Pinball Lez" by Custard (which David McCormack is also the lead singer for). Bluey can be seen being pushed in a stroller, implying she was slightly younger. The biggest change is in Bandit's characterization, being a much more tired and disengaged dad as opposed to the Reconstruction of the Standard '50s Father he became in the final product.
    • Rusty was originally going to be the main character of the series, before being replaced by Bluey, who was originally his cousin. Bluey became the protagonist after Rusty's colors were deemed "too drab".
    • Bingo was originally planned to be a boy, before being turned into a girl as the creators were worried that they would be accused of being too similar to Peppa Pig. She was also written to have celiac, before that plot point was dropped since the creators were worried about misrepresenting the disease.
    • A 2017 press release image sent out before the show aired depicts a visibly pregnant Chilli alongside her husband and daughters, indicating that part of the show would involve expecting another baby. This idea was dropped so the show could reflect creator Joe Brumm's own experience raising his two daughters.
    • Bluey: The Videogame originally had a fifth episode, more activities, a shops system with Muffin selling toys, and Pat (who is otherwise absent) selling plants, crawling and go-kart mechanics, different menus for levels, episodes and stickers (as opposed to the sticker book), and Muffin and Stripe being playable characters.
  • Word of God: Series creator Joe Brumm would confirm the fan theory that Chilli had a miscarriage at some point in the section he wrote for the book Hard to Bear about the episode "The Show".
  • Write What You Know: Much of the series is based on Brumm's experiences with raising his two daughters, as well as his own childhood memories.
