- Directed by Cast Member: John Wayne took over the direction when George Sherman was unable to do so due to ill health. (He did the same to Michael Curtiz on The Comancheros). When the film was completed he insisted that Sherman alone be credited as director.
- Hey, It's That Place!: The ranch house used for the McCandles ranch is the same house used for the Chisum ranch in Chisum, a John Wayne western made a year earlier. Note the scenery around the ranch.
- Real-Life Relative: John Wayne's son Ethan plays his grandson. His other son Patrick played James McCandles.
- Those Two Actors: This was the last time that John Wayne co-starred with Maureen O'Hara.
- Wag the Director: John Wayne was concerned by the violence and insisted on adding plenty of comedy. However many critics felt the film was damaged by too much comedy.
- What Could Have Been:
- Susan Hayward was considered for Martha McCandles.
- Jeff Bridges turned down the role of Michael McCandles.
- Gene Hackman was to be offered the role of John Fain if Richard Boone was unavailable.
- Working Title: The Million Dollar Kidnapping.
