Yakuza 2

  • How is Kiryu reintroduced here? By showing him having a nightmare reliving the deaths of Kazama, Yumi and Nishiki.
  • After the reveal that Kiryu was at the Jingewon massacre and Kaoru storms off, Kiryu stays by the river and tries to light a cigarette in the rain. A bottle rolls over and hits Kiryu's foot, which he picks up to give to the man who dropped it, and he ends up with a knife in the ribs for his trouble. The worst part is that something similar would end up happening to him in the next chronological game...
  • Kawara's death, especially when the gang finds out he is Kaoru's father, taking a bullet for her that would eventually kill him. Poor Kaoru. And then after losing her dad, Kaoru gets a second dose of sadness when she finds out Ryuji Goda is in fact her half-brother- and then has to watch him take on Kazuma in a Final Boss final showdown. Discovering family members only to lose them, she probably needs therapy. And more beer.
  • Ryuji's death. The guy finds out he's been lied to his entire life about his mother and his half-sister. He puts an end to the ambitions of the Greater-Scope Villain, but is shot repeatedly in the shootout. Instead of seeking medical help at Kaoru's insistence, he decides to go out in a final battle against Kiryu, who's also been shot, to see who the real dragon is. When the fight ends, he tells his half-sister that he wouldn't have been able to start over with a life of peace because there was too much Jingweon blood in him. He also tells her that she reminds him of his mother and recalls how she was since Kaoru couldn't remember her. His final request is for her to smile for him, which reminds him of his mother, and he goes out with a smile.

Yakuza Kiwami 2

  • In Chapter 1, Kiryu visits the graves of Yumi and Nishiki. Kiryu hopes that Nishiki has found peace and thanks him for saving his life, and hopes that Yumi is watching over Haruka.
  • Despite Majima's hilariously fast delivery of some of the vocals, his karaoke song "Shiawase nara ii ya (As Long As You're Happy)" is very sad when you listen to the lyrics. It's about a man who is willing to do anything and sacrifice his own happiness for the girl he loves, even though she's forgotten him. The background image of Majima holding Makoto Makimura in his arms really is the icing on the cake, especially since you can visit her massage parlor in The Majima Saga Gaiden Game where she won't recognize you until it's too late.
    • It gets even more tragic when one detail comes out. Throughout the majority of the song Majima sings much like he does any other time in the series where he sings Karaoke, intentionally screechy and discordant, but at the very end of the song his voice shifts back to the clearer and calmer singing voice he had back during 0 with the implication that his memories of Makoto caused the Mad Dog side of his personality to soften just a little bit as he becomes nostalgic for the calmer side of himself. If only for a few brief moments, we get to see that the real Goro Majima as seen in 0 is still there deep down.
  • Ryuji's death is already mentioned above, but Kiwami 2's version really amps it up by making the music of the final battle more powerful and emotional, and the "mission description" for the final fight really twists the knife in how tragic it's become by that point.
    Defeat Ryuji Goda
This is how it has to be.
  • It's blink and you miss it, but one of the restaurants has a menu called the "Nishiki" set. Order it, and Kiryu will mention how just the name brings back memories.
